The BurnerAlert Beeps To Remind You The Burner Is Still On
If you’ve been cooking for a long time, you’ve probably left the burner on at one time or another. (I did it once while drying my cast iron skillets.) It’s no laughing matter: a forgotten burner can lead to scorched pans, hands, even a stove fire. That’s why we’re curious about a new product we recently heard about that basically alerts you if you’ve left your burner on.

IKEA’s New PS 2014 Collection Has Some Great Pieces for the Kitchen
Have you seen what’s coming to IKEA this April? The new PS 2014 Collection hits US stores next week, and there are some fantastic pieces for the kitchen and dining room: The collection, titled “On the Move,” is designed for “the young, urban crowd living in smaller spaces,” according to IKEA’s press release. It has pieces for every room in the house, but I was naturally drawn to what was going on in the kitchen.

Kitchen Before & After: A Young Couple, a Fixer-Upper, and a Dream Kitchen Result
Before Hayley and her now-husband got married, they found a “well-kept fixer upper” in their ideal neighborhood. The realtor assured them that all they needed was a kitchen remodel, which sounded not so hard at the time. Of course, we know that kitchen remodels are no small undertaking — and they now know that, too! Fortunately, it all worked out and they have a dreamy kitchen to show for it. See what their kitchen looks like now, and how they did it: Lovely!

How To Squirt Dish Soap Into the Sink
If there’s one cleaning tutorial request we get more than any other, it’s this. Those dang dish soap bottles can be so confusing! Are you supposed to hold the bottle completely upside down, or at an angle for optimal soap dispensing? Should you squeeze near the top, or in the middle? And what about the bubbles? How do you know when you’ve got too many bubbles, or just enough bubbles? So. many. questions.

Kitchen Before & After: A Beautiful, Budget-and-Kid-Friendly Renovation
When Julia and Sara bought their rundown 1967 duplex in downtown Anchorage, it was a mess. “It had barely been touched in 40+ years,” Julia wrote to us. “Sculpted shag carpet, pink toilets, mirrored tile, etc.” After qualifying for a renovation mortgage loan and deciding on a contractor, Julia had just 24 hours to pick everything for the interior of the house — including the kitchen! — but she did it with the help of a designer and Pinterest inspiration board.

Hang Pots On the Wall Week 2: Choosing the Best Hanging System
Last week I decided this was the month I was finally going to hang my pots and pans on the wall. My first step was to find an easy-to-install weight-bearing wall system for the seven pans I plan to clear out of the cupboard. Here’s what I decided on: After doing loads of internet research this week and consulting the wall-mounted pot rack roundup I did a few months ago, I decided that I’m most fond of the rail-and-S-hook system, like the one seen above.

Via Chez Larsson: Label all containers and use a lazy Susan for spices.

8 Elegant Champagne Coupe Glasses
Ever since Faith shared her favorite rippled coupe glass (sadly no longer available), I’ve been thinking about these elegant, delicate glasses, traditionally used for serving Champagne but now are frequently found holding classic cocktails. I find the prettiest ones have a long, slender stem and a shallow bowl. Cut glass designs give some a vintage, Gatsby-esque feel, while others shimmer lightly in pink and gold — truly a lovely way to sip a little bubbly.

Kitchen Before & After: A Corner Storage Area Goes Vertical With Dramatic Results
Christene Barberich, editor-in-chief of fashion and shopping site Refinery29, decided to get serious this spring about the storage issues in her small Brooklyn kitchen. “Having everything piled on this one butcher block table was really taking the zen out of my kitchen,” she told Refinery29 recently. But how do you get more space in such a tiny corner, you ask? You go up… …and go red! This, friends, is the LACK wall shelf from IKEA ($49.99).

Kitchen Before & After: A Divided Kitchen Becomes the Ultimate Entertaining Space
Three years ago John and his family moved into a new home in Newport Beach, California. While the kitchen was arguably very nice (if not their style), these avid entertainers were frustrated by how the space was awkwardly divided into a kitchen and an eat-in dining nook. The island cut the kitchen in half and made it much smaller than it could have been.

Kitchen Before & After: Dark and Dreary to Light and Bright!
When Beth moved into her San Diego home, the 1980s kitchen had never been updated. “The kitchen was very small for the size of the home (4 bedrooms),” she wrote to us. She dreamed of an open kitchen and dining area, and a large pantry. Over the course of four months the existing kitchen was stripped to the studs and rebuilt it into a beautiful, light-filled space. See what this kitchen looks like now! So, so lovely!

Kitchen Before & After: From Blah Brown to Gray and White For $700
Deme’s Dayton, Ohio kitchen “was definitely drab,” she writes on her blog House For Five. “And dirty. And really, really blah-brown.” We see what she means. Pantry Before & After: An Empty Hallway Turned Pipe Shelf Pantry
A couple years Roeshel of the blog DIY Show Off removed the pantry closet in her kitchen to make room for the refrigerator. While that was necessary at the time, she still lost a lot of valuable storage space in the process. To regain that space, she turned a good-sized but unused hallway into a makeshift pantry area, complete with a DIY industrial pipe shelf. See what this area looks like now! The space suddenly looks so much bigger, doesn’t it!?

Kitchen Before & After: A Brown, Cramped Kitchen Opens Up For Under $3,500
When Christina and her husband first looked at the Philadelphia house that would eventually become their home, they almost didn’t buy it because of the kitchen: “It was so small, so brown, and so ugly,” Christina writes on her blog Christina’s Adventures. But they did, after deciding they were going to figure out a way to open, brighten, and maximize every bit of space in the kitchen — and on a tiny, $3,500 budget. And that’s exactly what they did!

Why Plates With Curved Edges Are Great for Parties
Plates might not get a lot of consideration when you’re planning a party (other than whether you’re going to go disposable or not), but here’s something to consider: for my recent porch party, I used white plates that had a bit of a lip, or curved edge, and thus discovered a nice benefit of this design:. It’s pretty simple, really: plates with a defined lip or curved edge help keep food from rolling off the plate. (I know, duh.

Cheese Has Never Looked So Good, Thanks to These Plates.
When I’m putting together a cheese plate, I’m typically more interested in the cheese than the plate. (After all, I can eat the cheese. I cannot eat the plate.) However, these cheese plates from Canadian design store Baba Souk completely upstage the cheese they’re meant to showcase… and I’m okay with that.

We Need to Talk About This: Hay Bale Dining Benches
Here’s a question: how do you feel about hay bales used as dining room seating? I spotted them in this Oakland House Tour on Apartment Therapy, and their merits (or demerits) have sparked lively conversation on the comment boards over there. So, let’s discuss. First of all, I have to give the owner props for coming up with such an unusual (and probably very affordable) seating arrangement. Hay bale benches are not something you see every day, at least not inside a home.
