Our Story

Founded in 2006, The Kitchn is now the top independently owned food site in the U.S., helping a global monthly audience of 27M feel at home in their kitchens every day. Originally grown and shaped by Faith Durand, award-winning author ofThe Kitchn Cookbook, and now by Editor-in-Chief, Lindsay Funston, visiting The Kitchn is kinda like hanging out with your friend who spends their days thinking about food (we've all got one).

What We're All About

We love figuring out what to cook for dinner tonight, discovering how to level up chocolate chip cookies, and tasting the newest snacks worth buying. We're all about cooking, but we're also realists: We want weeknight recipes that take 20 minutes. We shop at budget-friendly supermarkets. We live for a shortcut.

And you don't have to be someone who cooks multiple times a week to feel like The Kitchn is the place for you. We cover all types of essential content that will better your day to day: ranking the best canned chili, reporting on cabinet trends that are in (and out!), testing the cleaning method all over TikTok.

Where's the “e”?

We leave the “e” in kitchen at the door. Ego, exasperation, exhaustion — these don't belong in our style of cooking. The Kitchn is built for real life. Our recipes are approachable, clever, and always unforgettable.

Meet the Team

The Kitchn is created by a staff of home cooks and editors living across the country. Our headquarters are in SoHo, NYC, where we photograph our recipes and hacks in our studio and conduct very important taste tests. We obsess over all aspects of life in the kitchen: cooking, snacking, grocery shopping, cleaning and organizing (even renovating).

What Makes a Kitchn Recipe So Special?

We know that every day you can choose from millions of recipes on the internet, so when you cook from The Kitchn we want to make sure it's memorable — and that you get a taste of what our food is all about.

  • Our recipes are developed and cross-tested in home kitchens by our staff and expert contributors, using the same tools and equipment as you. We do our own dishes, so we aim to keep things easy!
  • We call for ingredients in the familiar way you find them in the grocery store and try to use up the whole package to minimize food waste.
  • Our signature “No-Scroll” style makes meal planning and cooking from your phone actually easy — we list ingredient quantities in every step so you never lose your place!
  • Every recipe gets tested with The Kitchn Check to ensure it's accurate and friendly to cook. (We even cook through our recipes with two types of salt to ensure the most spot-on amount.)

Our DEI Commitment

At The Kitchn, we believe the heart of a community lies in the heart of the home. We also know that no two homes or kitchens look the same and we celebrate those differences. We want to tell the story of every dish we publish by understanding, respecting, and embracing its origins, ingredients, and culinary traditions.

Our recipes are developed, tested, and written by experienced cooks and cuisine experts, whom we personally seek out, identify, and connect with. We don't obsess over dishes being done in the “the right way” — we believe a cuisine is a living, constantly evolving thing, and we always tell the personal stories behind our recipes.

We work with people who are committed to gaining deep and relevant experience. Part of this work is expanding our roster of contributors to feature more cuisines from around the world. As editors, we uphold strong standards, ensuring all of our recipes are well-informed, thoroughly tested, and undeniably delicious.

At Apartment Therapy Media, we showcase a diverse range of home dwellers and home cooks, aiming to create an inclusive community for our audience, employees, and contributors.

Why You Should Trust Our Product Recommendations

We take product recommendations seriously — especially when they're ones we use in the kitchen. Everything we recommend, whether it's a Dutch oven we've used for years or our most trusted stand mixer, has been independently selected by our editors, based on thorough testing (sometimes for months!), tasting, or research to help you find only the best. We like to sweat the details, examining why one beloved skillet is superior to another or if a viral space-saving gadget is actually worth the hype.

We may earn a commission through affiliate partnerships with select retailers when you click a link on our site that takes you to shop. These commissions do not influence our content. Guided by our editorial standards, The Kitchn readers always come first. Read more about How We Shop For You.
