Recipe: Sour Cream & Onion Doughnuts
While I love the idea of a little hand-held, deep-fried ringlet of sweetness, most doughnuts make my teeth hurt and coat the roof of my mouth with a fatty film, so I avoid them, and most other overly sweet desserts. But I do like a challenge, so lately I have been playing around in the kitchen with the idea of a savory take on sweets. This week my inspiration came as I eyed a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips at the corner deli, displayed next to a box of powder sugar doughnuts.

Recipe: Chocolate-Glazed Baked Doughnuts with Sprinkles
I purchased a doughnut pan a few years back for a recipe-testing project I was working on, but after two or three uses, it got squirreled away in my laundry room, along with plenty of other unitaskers left quietly to die. I decided recently to brush off the pan and give it another go, and I am so glad I did.

Recipe: Gluten-Free Baked Vanilla Spice Sprinkle Doughnuts
Since going gluten-free, doughnuts are one of the things I miss most during the holidays. Each year, on December 26, my grandfather would wake up before everyone else and make his way to the local doughnut store. He’d bring back a bakers’ dozen of every kind of sugary treat. As each of us awoke, sleepy-eyed, stepping over boxes and leftover ribbon, we would reach into the box for something sweet and find our way to a cup of coffee or tea.

Easy Sweet Recipe: Kumquat Tarts with Almond-Date Crust
When I first conceived of these bright little tarts, I imagined them as dessert. Later I decided that they were even better as a fancy, yet healthy (gluten-free and sugar-free), breakfast. Either way, they are a luscious pairing of two winter gems: kumquats and dates. Kumquats and dates are some of my favorite treats from the winter farmers’ markets here in Southern California.

Recipe: Fig and Raspberry Bakewell Tarts
I can think of few finer uses for jam than a bakewell tart, a scrumptious British dessert combining buttery short crust pastry with sweet fruit preserves and almond frangipane. For these mini bakewell tarts made in a muffin tin, I used raspberry jam and early autumn figs, a lovely summer-meets-fall pairing.Biting into a bakewell tart is pure bliss – on the outside you have a flaky crust, which holds rich, chewy almond frangipane and below that, a layer of sweet jam.

Spicy Sticky Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Icing
I come from a generously-sized family, the sort that prompted wide eyes and under-the-breath counting from strangers who glimpsed our brood at the library or grocery store. I’ll spare you the counting and say that I have five brothers and two sisters, so eight of us, plus parents, and now assorted spouses and in-laws. Christmas is an all-day affair for us, with stockings and enough presents to necessitate an intermission about halfway through unwrapping.

Recipe: Strawberry Cheesecake Breakfast Bars
There’s a time and a place for a granola bar or energy bar, and then there’s an altogether different time for a decadent, crumbly, fruit-filled bar with a silky layer of cream cheese. These bars are for that occasion — and for all the brunches and spring parties that may be on your calendar in the coming months. Or for no occasion at all, other than breaking up the inevitable breakfast rut that strikes us all at some point.

Recipe: Coffee Cake Muffins
Sometimes when you combine two beloved things into one new form, you wonder how you ever ate them separately. I find this to be true especially after developing the recipe for these coffee cake muffins. With a buttery, crumbly topping and a slightly sweet glaze, they are truly the best of both worlds. I came up with the idea for these muffins this past summer at a diner in Upstate New York.

Recipe: Muffin-Tin Monkey Breads, 3 Ways
It makes me sad how much of my life was spent “hating” monkey bread. It was an unfounded loathing, solely rooted in my own lack of understanding of how glorious such a thing could be. What is there, after all, to hate about buttery, cakey, cinnamon-sugar bread? Absolutely nothing, that’s what. There’s even less to hate when it’s served up in three single-serving sized flavors.

Recipe: Mini Puff Pastry Bear Claws with Chocolate Filling
Traditional bear claws are a bakery treat, made from a sweet yeasted Danish dough that is as delicious and delicate as it is time-consuming. Filled with chocolate and cut into an almost paw shape, bear claws can be made the easy way, with commercial, store-bought puff pastry. No, it’s not exactly the same, but boy oh boy, puff pastry bear claws are incredible in their own right.

Recipe: Catskills Apple Dumplings
What are apple dumplings? Think of them as bite-sized versions of apple pie (only better), with all the goodness of a flaky crust and gooey apple filling. Many are made with whole apples, but the ones I’m hooked on are made with diced apples, which make them super easy to eat. I love picking some up from a local farm stand as a treat for my family and, no matter what, I always eat one straight away. They’re that good!

Traditional British Recipe: Eccles Cakes
Several years ago I was at a local farmer’s market, looking over a baker’s spread, when a small round pastry caught my eye. It was neatly stacked on its fellows, each crimped, golden, and speckled with grains of sugar. What’s that? I asked the amiable proprietor. Even from my side of the table they looked heavy and firm, like little pats of butter. English Eccles cakes! he said, in a rolling British accent.

How To Make Croissants
It’s probably a good thing that croissants are so fussy to make or I’d be eating them every day. As it is, the whole process of making the croissant dough, layering it with butter (and then more butter), shaping the rolls, and baking them to crispy perfection is at least a two-day affair. But friends, I have to tell you — it is so very worth it.

How To Make Almond Croissants (the Easy Way)
I know that chocolate croissants (or, more correctly, pain au chocolat) are the stars of most pastry cases. But personally, if I’m going to eat a pastry for breakfast, it’s going to be the chocolatine‘s less glam cousin, the almond croissant. I love the nutty, sweet filling, and that dusting of powdered sugar on top. But here’s the thing: You don’t need to go to the pastry shop to get an almond croissant. Do you know how easy they are to make at home?

Not to be confused with breakfast coffee cake, our Coffee Cake with Coffee Glaze is a fluffy, moist, and coffee-scented dessert with a sweet, creamy glaze icing. It took some real testing to get there (we’ll show you our testing process later this week).

Recipe: Overnight Buttery Streusel Coffee Cake
When I think of coffee cake, I don’t necessarily think of “a cake you eat with coffee.” To be honest, when I think of coffee cake I think of Sara Lee. On the particularly hurried fall mornings of my childhood — three sisters scrambling amongst each other to get out the door alive — that frozen red box would emerge proudly from the freezer. What was surely just the ultimate time-saver for for my parents was the edible equivalent of a super bowl ring to us kids.

Recipe: Marbled Coffee Cake with Nutty Crumb Streusel
This is a darn fine coffee cake, with a sweet vanilla cake, generous streusel and nuts throughout, and a cinnamon-vanilla aroma that will make your house smell better than a bakery. How To Make Kugelhopf Breakfast Rolls
Fresh from the oven on a weekend morning, these kugelhopf rolls are absolute show-stoppers. And that’s even before you dip them in melted butter and roll them in cinnamon and sugar! I love to eat them slowly, pulling off one tender doughnut-like piece at a time and taking sips of coffee in between. This recipe is pure buttery, sugary bliss. The inspiration for these yeasty morning rolls came from the kugelhopf that I recently had at Bread and Chocolate Bakery in Newton, Massachusetts.

Holiday Recipe: Spiced Cinnamon Eggnog Rolls
There was always music playing in my childhood home, especially around the holidays. Once the tunes turned to holiday jingles, it signaled that there was fun to be had and cookies to be made. My mom would always mix it up, from the classics to her favorite R&B artists. Years later, I’ve inherited her eclectic tastes while adding my own favorites, so my Christmas baking happens to a soundtrack of Frank Sinatra, Burl Ives, Mariah Carey, and yes, Alvin & The Chipmunks.

Breakfast in Bed Recipe: IKEA-Inspired Cinnamon Rolls

We decided to recreate the popular rolls to IKEA standards – a few simple components and easy assembly for breakfast in bed. Brunch Recipe: Caramel-Pecan Sticky Buns
These are inspired by what my Southern grandmother called “stickies.” She would pat out her homemade buttermilk biscuit dough into a rectangle, top it with soft butter and cinnamon-sugar, roll it up into a log, cut it into rounds, and nestle them into a cake pan. Delicious for sure, but some cooks — even accomplished ones — can feel a little intimidated about making homemade biscuits. This short-cut version is equally divine, but really easy.
