Every summer, without fail, I order an Oreo milkshake from the ice cream parlor Sundae School on Cape Cod. It’s the only flavor I ever get, and they make what I deem the perfect milkshake. Why is it so perfect? It’s because they use real milkshake machines with wands that turn the ice cream and milk into a thick, drinkable treat without pulverizing the cookies into something unrecognizable. I love milkshakes more than just eating ice cream straight-up, so making a good at-home milkshake is something I take very, very seriously. Here’s how I recreate my favorite ice cream drink at home.

What’s in an Oreo Milkshake?

For an Oreo milkshake, the ingredient list is simple: softened vanilla ice cream, milk, and chopped Oreo cookies. You can definitely up the Oreo factor and start with cookies-and-cream ice cream if you want, and while you can use any kind of milk, the richer the milk, the tastier the milkshake.

What Equipment Do I Need to Make an Oreo Milkshake?

As much as I would love to have a milkshake machine at home, my cabinets can’t accommodate another piece of kitchen equipment. A regular blender will do the trick here, as long as you chop the Oreos into small bits first.

Blend the milkshake with only half of the cookie bits to start to really get a milkshake base full of Oreo flavor. Then add the remaining cookies and pulse briefly to incorporate them into the shake. What you’re left with is a well-blended cookie shake that still has bites of cookie left.

Oreo Milkshake Toppings

I’m a bit of a purist about milkshakes and generally eschew toppings, but there’s no stopping you from adding some whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate sauce or hot fudge, or more cookies on top (or all three!). Keep the cookie on top whole and just dip into the shake, or else make sure the pieces you sprinkle on are chopped finely enough to be able to slurp up in the straw — no one likes toppings blocking your sips!

Nutritional Info

Ingredients

For the milkshake:

  • 1 pint

vanilla ice cream (about 2 cups)

  • 2/3 cup

    2/3 cup milk, preferably whole

  • 8

chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos

Garnish options:

  • Whipped cream

  • 1

chocolate sandwich cookie, such as Oreo

  • Chocolate syrup or sauce

Instructions

  1. Let 1 pint vanilla ice cream sit out at room temperature until starting to soften, 10 to 15 minutes (softened ice cream will blend with ease and require less milk to get things moving). Give the container a squeeze — it shouldn’t be rock hard and should give slightly when it’s ready.

  2. Meanwhile, if you have room in your freezer, stick 2 tall drinking or milkshake glasses (about 12 ounces) in there, or else chill the glasses in the refrigerator. Chop 8 chocolate sandwich cookies into pieces no larger than 1/3-inch (about 1 cup). If you want cookies for garnish, finely chop 1 more cookie into crumbs no larger than a peppercorn.

  3. Pour 2/3 cup milk into a blender. Add half of the chopped cookies and top with the softened ice cream. Starting on the lowest speed and working your way up to medium speed, blend for 30 seconds. Stir to break up any large chunks of ice cream and continue to blend on medium speed until the milkshake is smooth and pourable, 15 to 30 seconds more. You want a final consistency that pours like lava.

  4. Add the remaining chopped cookies and stir them in with a rubber spatula or spoon so that they’re submerged. Pulse a few times (6 to 8 pulses) to just combine, do not overmix.

  5. If desired, drizzle some chocolate syrup or sauce down the sides of the chilled glasses. Divide the milkshake between the glasses. Garnish with whipped cream, cookie crumbs, and more chocolate syrup as desired. Serve immediately with straws.
