What to Know About Misen’s Affordable Pro-Level Cookware — Including Its End-of-Year Sale
Pronounced mee-zen, Misen is a cookware brand that combines high-quality kitchen cookware and tools with surprisingly reasonable prices. If you’ve ever found yourself frustrated with a kitchen knife that got dull too fast or a pan that just doesn’t seem to cook your food evenly, you’ve been in the same boat as Misen’s founder Omar Rada. The brand arose when he realized that his low-quality kitchen tools and cookware just weren’t cutting it (pun not intended!), but that high-quality kitchen tools and cookware were steeply priced.
From nonstick pans to essential kitchen knives, the brand sells a variety of well-priced cookware, knives, and kitchen tools. Here’s everything you need to know about Misen to help you shop the brand.
What Is Misen?
Misen is a professional-quality cookware brand that sells knives, various types of cookware, and cooking tools such as shears, tongs, and spatulas. The name Misen is a nod to the French phrase “mise en place,” which means “to put in place.” All chefs, whether professional or amateur, need to set up their workstations with pre-measured ingredients and all their tools before they even begin cooking — and that’s where Misen comes in.
Through his own cooking journey, Rada realized that great kitchen tools can make all the difference, and they can make your time in the kitchen more enjoyable. When he also found that professional-quality cooking tools could be prohibitively expensive, he decided to create his own at a lower price point.
What Does Misen Sell?
Misen sells a variety of cookware, knives, and kitchen tools. The company’s knives are made of Japanese steel and are available as single knives or in sets. You can even personalize them for an addition cost, so they make great gifts.
In the cookware category, Misen sells nonstick cookware, enameled cast iron cookware, carbon steel cookware, stainless steel cookware, and bakeware. Their cookware is compatible with all traditional stovetops: gas, electric, ceramic, and induction.
You can also purchase accessories from Misen such as pot holders and seasoning wax, as well as tools like kitchen shears and whisks.
Is Misen’s Nonstick Cookware Safe?
Misen’s nonstick cookware is safe up to 450°F. According to the brand, “All of our cookware has been tested for FDA, LFGB, and California Prop 65 certifications which have been successfully received!”
The nonstick cookware is made of 4.2 millimeters of commercial-grade aluminum, a stainless steel plate, a plasma primer layer to help the nonstick coating stick, and Dupont’s premier 3-layer platinum coating. This coating is PFOA-free, but it’s not PTFE (Teflon) free; more on the Teflon in Misen’s products below.
Does Misen Cookware Use Teflon?
Yes, Misen uses Teflon, which is the name brand for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), in its nonstick cookware. It’s used in many nonstick pots and pans because it prevents food from sticking to the surface of the pan. Teflon is a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), and it may be dangerous when it’s released in small particles.
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) explains that scientists are still learning about the health effects of PFAS. Currently, they believe that they may lead to increased cholesterol levels, changes in liver enzymes, small decreases in infant birth weights, decreased vaccine response in children, increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, and increased risk of kidney or testicular cancer.
While there is a potential exposure to PFAS from Teflon-coated cookware, Misen’s cookware is free from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is possibly carcinogenic to humans. PFOA was commonly found in Teflon cookware before 2013, but has been removed from most nonstick cookware since then.
If you use Misen nonstick cookware as directed and don’t heat it higher than 450°F, it’s probably safe to use and unlikely that any harmful chemicals are being released. Of course, if you want to err on the side of caution, look at Misen’s Teflon-free cookware, such as their stainless steel or carbon steel cookware.
