My husband worked as a bartender for many years. Before we had kids, I’d often keep him company on slow nights at the restaurant. These days, we’ve replaced the restaurant’s sleek bar with our cluttered kitchen island. But, this hasn’t stopped us from enjoying a cocktail or two after the kids have gone to bed.

This fall-inspired cocktail, which we’ve dubbed the “Autumn Sweater”, came about during one of those nights. It’s a fun fall twist on an old-fashioned cocktail. Made with applejack, Angostura bitters, maple simple syrup, and finished with an orange peel, this cocktail will keep you warm on those cool nights. Even better: it comes together in less than five minutes.

Ingredients in an Autumn Sweater Cocktail

  • Applejack: Also known as blended apple brandy, this spirit is made from hard cider. It has the heft of whiskey with a smooth apple flavor. If you can’t find applejack, you can also use apple brandy.
  • Maple syrup: For a smooth, lightly sweetened cocktail, I make a quick maple simple syrup by combining equal parts hot water and maple syrup. Because this is a stirred cocktail, a simple syrup will dissolve and incorporate into the cocktail more easily than using maple syrup alone.
  • Angostura bitters: Two dashes help tie the flavors together, rounding out the cocktail.
  • Orange peel: Twisting the peel over the surface of the drink adds flavor and an aromatic finish.

Nutritional Info

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons

    hot water

  • 2 teaspoons

    maple syrup

  • 1 1/2 ounces

applejack (80 proof), such as Laird’s

  • 1/4 teaspoon

    Angostura bitters (about 2 dashes)

  • Ice

  • 1 long strip

    fresh orange peel

Instructions

  1. Place 2 teaspoons hot water and 2 teaspoons maple syrup in a mixing glass or cocktail shaker and stir until well combined. Add 1 1/2 ounces applejack and 1/4 teaspoon Angostura bitters. Add enough ice to fill the mixing glass about half-full. Stir until the cocktail is very chilled, about 30 seconds.

  2. Pour the cocktail through a strainer into a 4-ounce or larger coupe glass, or strain into an old-fashioned glass (filled with ice if desired). Twist the orange peel directly over the cocktail’s surface, then garnish with the peel.
