The concept of ordering meat online has always felt a tad bit strange to me, but as 2020 slowly started to shape up and I began avoiding excess trips to the grocery store, the idea suddenly became more appealing. Why trek all the way across town to my favorite butcher when I could purchase premium meats online from the comfort of my couch? After a bit of research, I found FarmFoods, an online retailer that conveniently delivers premium meats and seafood straight to your door. And after digging around their website and finding a ton of high-quality meat options, I knew I needed to give it a try. I placed an order for a few of my favorite cuts and waited patiently for them to arrive. Here’s how it played out.

How FarmFoods Works

FarmFoods is an online market that offers a wide range of meats from an array of different farms across the United States. You simply pick the items you want, place your order, and the meat is delivered to your door, neatly packed in an insulated styrofoam box. Shipping is free on all orders over 10 pounds, and your package arrives with enough dry ice to keep items cold for 12 hours — so if your box gets delivered while you’re away from home, you don’t have to worry about your meat going bad.

The first thing that impressed me about FarmFoods was the amount of information they provide about the farms the animals are raised on. For example, as I was browsing through their whole chicken offerings, I ended up on a page about Marksbury Farm in Kentucky that was packed with info about the owners, their families, and their farming practices. Sweet! I loved this level of transparency — it was something you just can’t get at a conventional grocery store — and it helped me pick out products that align with my food philosophy.

Another major pro? I was also impressed with how wide of a selection of meats FarmFoods offers. They sell pork, chicken, beef, bison, lamb, and even elk. Within each category is a large selection of cuts to choose from — including hard-to-find ones like pork lard, broth bones, and pork feet. As someone who cooks for a living, I appreciate just how vast their selection is. I honestly wanted to try out everything but ended up with a small assortment of items including bacon, beef tenderloin, and grass-fed beef.

How Is the Quality of the Meat?

This is my first time ordering meat online, and the experience was a serious success! As I opened up my box and looked through the products I ordered, I was pleasantly surprised at just how good everything looked. The bacon was thick-cut and beautiful, and every packet of meat was tightly sealed in plastic to keep items fresh.

The first thing I cooked was the bacon (naturally!). I placed it directly in a cast-iron skillet and popped it in the oven to slowly render. The resulting bacon was crispy, flavorful, and thick without being too hefty. From the very first bite, I could instantly tell this was high-quality bacon and much more premium compared to most conventional options you find at the grocery store. Next up was the grass-fed beef, which I ended up making smash burgers with. The meat beautifully cooked through and the end result was flavorful and juicy. As for the other meats? I have them stashed in my fridge to cook up later in the week.

My Final Thoughts

I never thought I would be someone who ordered meat online, but I have fully come around to the idea after using FarmFoods. The meat is not only just as good as the meat I get at my local butcher but, honestly, better! I appreciated how much information I was given, and the transparency helped me pick out farms that aligned with what I consider important and choose products accordingly. But most importantly, the meat was also just really delicious, high-quality, and fresh. I will definitely be using this service again and can’t recommend it enough to anyone who is trying to avoid excess trips to the grocery store right now. Next up, I’m already building my basket packed with harder-to-find cuts of meat that are easily available on the site. Elk bolognese, anyone?
