A staple of school lunch boxes across the country, the Oreo has been America’s top cookie for quite some time now.

But who knew just how far ahead they were of the competition?

Oreo outsells the next highest-grossing cookie threefold. Plus, they have double the annual sales of Cheerios, and five times the sales of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

What makes Oreo so popular? First and foremost, how good the cookies taste. But we’ll also give credit to some great advertising, and Oreo’s willingness to experiment with new flavors like birthday cake, mint, and, most recently, red velvet.
