There are many things you can do to ensure you brew a good cup of coffee at home, but the essential is, of course, to start with great beans, and great beans should be fresh beans. But not all of us live within close proximity to a roaster, and even if we do, there might be other roasters we want to try out.

For that, there are coffee subscriptions. With the rise of specialty coffee culture, nowadays there are many different subscription services. You can subscribe to coffees from one single roaster, or get into a subscription program that lets you taste coffees from a variety of different ones. Whatever your needs, there’s a subscription program out there for you that’ll ensure you never run out of coffee again.

Single Roaster Subscriptions

There are many roasters who offer subscriptions to their coffees, ensuring that you get freshly roasted coffee delivered straight to your door — an excellent option for anyone who doesn’t have easy access to buying coffee regularly. Check to see if your favorite roaster offers a subscription. If you’re looking to discover some of the most well-known independent roasters, here are a few to try out.

If you’ve never tried Counter Culture beans, I would highly recommend them. Founded in 1995, Counter Culture has been one of the leaders in the specialty coffee movement, highly focused on sustainability and quality. With their Single Origin Subscription you get two different 12-ounce bags of seasonal, freshly roasted coffees.

  • Delivered: Every one, two, three, or four weeks.

With a hefty amount of investment behind them, Blue Bottle is really trying to change the specialty game. In their subscription service you choose how much coffee you want and how often you want it. You can choose from a half bag, single bag, double bag, or even triple bag if you are a mass coffee drinker, or just live with a bunch of fellow coffee addicts.

  • Delivered: Every one, two, three, or four weeks.

Another longtime player on the specialty coffee scene, Intelligentsia, similar to Counter Culture, offers a rotating subscription of In Season/Direct Trade beans for those who want to explore the world of coffee. Of course you can also subscribe to specific Intelligentsia coffees if you know exactly what you want.

  • Delivered: Every one, two, three, or four weeks.

Portland’s beloved and well-renowned Heart offers a bi-weekly subscription, with a rotating selection of coffee. Then if you like the coffee you’ve tasted, you can always order more.

  • Delivered: Every two weeks.

Driftaway Coffee, run by a husband and wife team out of Brooklyn, where they roast their beans, is all about personalization. The first time you order, four different samples are sent to you. You pick the one you like the best, and after that, the coffees sent to you will be specific to your tastes. This is a great subscription for someone wanting to dive into the world of coffee, as Driftaway makes the process simple yet still focused on what you think tastes best. And it ensures you fresh coffee, as the coffees are shipped within 48 hours of roasting.

  • Delivered: Every two weeks.

Multiple Roaster Subscriptions

Nowadays, there are independent roasters popping up just about everywhere, and subscription services who source their coffee from multiple roasters are a great way way to discover these businesses without going on an extended road trip to visit them all in person.

MistoBox is a personalized subscription that caters to your personal preferences, and is great for those who want to explore a variety of roasters. When you sign up, you answer a few questions about your tastes and how you brew. Then when it comes time to ship your coffee, the people at MistoBox make a special selection based upon your preferences. MistoBox works with over 30 different specialty roasters, like Verve, Tandem Roasters, and Coava, to ensure a diverse selection of coffee.

  • Delivered: Depends on your coffee-drinking habit!

Craft Coffee is another breed of personalized subscriptions. Go to the website and you will be asked whether or not you usually drink one coffee at home, or several. Then you can fill out what coffees you usually drink (noting the roaster and the specific coffee), as well as if you want to try something similar to what you usually drink, or something different. Craft Coffee selects three different roasters each month, sourcing the beans from a long list of independent roasters around the country — some you might recognize and some you might not – which makes this a great subscription for anyone who wants to discover new roasters.

  • Delivered: Once a month.

Coffee is wonderful, but what about coffee and a treat? That’s what you get in the monthly package from Citizen Bean. Besides carefully sourced coffee beans from small-batch roasters, your coffee will also come with a food sample (like dark chocolate, perhaps) or coffee accessory, as well as How Tos and roaster profiles. In other words, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. You can subscribe for three, six, or 12 months at a time, and a portion of the sales every month goes to a charity selected by the roaster.

  • Delivered: Once a month.

Have a hankering for Pacific Northwest coffee? Bean Box is a coffee subscription company that ships coffee solely from Seattle roasters. The subscription is monthly and you will receive four different coffees from different independent Seattle roasters.

Disappointed by what he found, he decided to launch a business to ensure that people could have access to freshly roasted coffee. Coffee, selected from artisan roasters in Los Angeles, is roasted and shipped on the same day, and comes to you with a “start-drinking-on” date.
