Pumpkin spice is the unofficial fragrance of fall. As soon as I opened my computer on September 1, I expected to see visible waves of sparkly orange pumpkin spice aroma pouring out of Pinterest, lifting people up by their noses and carrying them through the air like in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons.

When Starbucks first came out with its Pumpkin Spice Latte, everyone thought it was just one of many seasonal flavors that seemed like a good idea at the time. But pumpkin spice has become a juggernaut well beyond lattes. If you search for “pumpkin spice” on Pinterest, you’ll find everything from DIY latte recipes to pumpkin spice bath bombs. “Pumpkin spice” is even a hair color trend, which I thought sounded funny until I saw the pictures, and now I’m thinking I need some light auburn highlights for fall, to go with all the lattes.

Pumpkin spice lattes were the thing that started the whole phenomenon, so I always assumed the most popular pumpkin spice recipe on Pinterest would be some version of the famed PSL. But it’s not a beverage at all! I’m flabbergasted.

The most popular pumpkin spice recipe on Pinterest is this pumpkin spice Bundt cake from the blogger behind A Healthy Life for Me. It was originally designed as a Thanksgiving dessert that fills the traditional pumpkin pie niche, while being a bit easier to serve and able to be made well in advance of the dinner. The recipe has been saved more than 11,000 times on Pinterest, and it looks very tasty.

This cake is made with pumpkin purée, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Best of all, the whole thing is covered with a thick cream cheese glaze. (I am pretty much always in favor of cream cheese frosting.)

It’s a great-looking cake full of warm spices, and I know it was created as a pumpkin pie substitute for Thanksgiving dessert, but as soon as I saw it, my first thought was, breakfast! We already know pumpkin spice tastes great with coffee.
