The COVID-19 crisis in India is devastating. Recent estimates of daily cases are around 300,000, and according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the nation has had over 18 million confirmed coronavirus cases and 200,000 deaths (although experts predict that number to be extremely undercounted). Hospitals have reached capacity and oxygen supplies are running out, leaving the country desperate for relief

With India’s healthcare system and aid groups struggling to keep up with demand, every dollar goes a long way — including from you. Here are some causes and organizations you can support right now to help India’s COVID-19 catastrophe.

Help supply oxygen via American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

The American Associate of Physicians of India, made up of more than 80,000 practicing physicians in the U.S., is accepting donations that will pay for oxygen concentrators to be sent to India. You can donate the cost of a single machine ($500) or however much you’re able on their website.

Provide P.P.E. and other medical supplies to healthcare facilities via UNICEF.

Your donations to United Nations Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, will go towards providing personal protective equipment to essential healthcare workers in India as they fight to contain COVID-19. Additionally, any amount sent to UNICEF will help with providing other supplies such as oxygen concentrators and coronavirus test kits. Head to their website on how to donate.

Send staple foods to communities in need via Rapid Response.

This disaster relief organization based in India is distributing basic food essentials such as rice, dal, salt, sugar, and oil to vulnerable communities across the country. Donating 500 Indian Rupee, or roughly $6.76 USD, will provide one family a week’s worth of food. Find out how you can get involved on their donation page.

Assist the unhoused population via Uday Foundation.

This nonprofit organization based in New Delhi, India, is on a mission to help distribute 10,000 wellness kits to the underprivileged and unhoused neighbors around the city. As part of their #StayWell campaign, the wellness kits includes basic over the counter medicines as well as food for prevention and also those recovering from the virus. In addition to wellness kits, you can also send donations to help distribute meals and oxygen concentrators. Check their website for more information.

In addition to those mentioned above, there are countless other organizations that are helping with COVID relief, both based in India and internationally. Check this list compiled by Public Good, or this vetted list created by Diaspora Co. Spices for a direct way to send a donation today.
