These New Glow-in-the-Dark Halloween Candies Are Cool but Fundamentally Flawed
As someone who grew up with glow-in-the-dark stars on her bedroom ceiling and glow-in-the-dark nail polish (that I’m pretty sure I bought at Spencer’s!), I was super pumped to hear that Hershey had new packaging for its classic Halloween candies (Reese’s, Kit Kat, and Hershey’s chocolate bars) that would actually glow.
Of course, I was totally skeptical. Would the wrappers shine bright enough? YES! THEY DO! The photos you see here were shot in a black box with normal lights — no special equipment or anything. Look at how much they glow! (We even added some glow-in-the-dark stars for reference.)

So what’s my issue then? The wrappers clearly say “CHARGE UNDER LIGHT!” on the backs. See, in order to do that at home, I had to spread them out all over my kitchen counter. And, um, that’s not usually how I store my Halloween candy. Normally, I open the bags and dump the pieces into a cute, pumpkin-shaped bucket, which I then set by the door until October 31st rolls around. If I did that, only the first few pieces on the top of the bucket would end up glowing. And I want them all to glow as I divvy them up to tiny ghosts and goblins. (Also: My instinct was to put them under a desk light for ultimate charging but that seems like a bad, melt-inducing idea!)
A press release for the candies suggested black lights, which would be a good thing to swap in place of my usual porch light. But again, I want the pieces to shine brightly in these little monsters’ pillowcases as they walk down my driveway.
I guess that means my countertops are going to be a little cluttered leading up to Halloween? A small price to pay for candy that’ll literally light up kids’ faces.
