The One Meat Thermometer to Rule Them All (It’s on Sale!)
There are a few things that make me nervous in a kitchen: making meringues, trussing poultry, and making sure roasted or grilled meats are perfectly cooked. And while the first two have become less intimidating with practice, my ability to predict doneness hasn’t improved much in all the years I’ve been cooking. However, when a grilling-enthusiast friend gifted me a ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE meat thermometer a few years ago, I was thrilled — my days of under or over cooking steaks would be over. What’s So Great About the ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE?
This instant-read thermometer has come in clutch in so many situations, whether it’s pan-frying pork chops, oven-roasting a whole chicken, or grilling ribeyes. The probe is easy to insert thanks to a tapered tip that sends out a reading in literally one second. Thermapen claims an accuracy specification of ± 0.5°F, which is incredibly precise and gives me plenty of confidence that I’m not serving anything that is over or underdone.
I’ve also used it to ensure that the water I add to yeast isn’t too hot, monitor the temperature for poaching liquids, and make sure my oil is perfectly heated for deep-frying.
One thing I love is the backlit display, which automatically illuminates in lower-light settings. The display also auto-rotates so the numbers are easy to read no matter if I’m holding the thermometer in my left or right hand. It runs on one AAA battery and promises about 2,000 hours of battery life, partially due to automatic sleep and wake modes that rely on a motion sensor to activate (I don’t think I’ve changed the battery since I’ve owned it).
At about $100 when it’s not on sale, it’s definitely an investment, but there’s a reason this has been mentioned on numerous “Best Of” meat thermometer lists — including ours. If you need a little assistance when it comes to gauging doneness or even just to temp boiling water, you’ll find it’s a worthy and indispensable tool.
While I may never actually master the art of grilling by sight and touch, I’ve made my peace with it — the Thermapen One lets me make a perfect medium-rare steak and that’s all that matters.
