When the cold winter months arrive, the chilling winds tend to wreak havoc on my lips. It’s mistletoe season, and these lips are dry and chapped. No thanks.

Usually, I find myself shelling out a pretty penny in order to spring for these all natural minty lip balms to soothe my troubled smoochers. But, this year I decided to make my own. I’m not sure I’ll ever buy the stuff again. Yes, it’s that easy. Plus, I plan to drop these into holiday care packages, stockings and presents alike.

With only a few natural ingredients, such as beeswax and coconut oil, this lip balm comes together in about fifteen minutes. Peppermint essential oils give it that refreshing holiday feel and cooling sensation. Don’t like peppermint? Simply use a different essential oil. Lavender, eucalyptus, and sweet orange oils are some of my favorites.

If you’re not into scents, you can leave them out entirely and still get the benefits of an all-natural lip balm. You can even get fancy and add a little bit of color for a tint. Or, not. Make it custom to you. The possibilities are vast.

Warning: once you start making your own lip balm, it might get a little addictive. I ended up with four different colors and 25+ containers of lip balm in under a half an hour. Happy crafting!

Have you ever made lip balm before? If so, what are some of your favorite blends? Let’s inspire each other.

Peppermint Lip Balm

Makes 25 (5-gram) pots

Nutritional Info

Ingredients

Lip Balm:

Materials:

  • 25+ lip gloss containers

  • Pint-sized mason jar

  • Jar lifter

  • Pot of boiling water

  • A disposable chopstick for stirring the gloss

Instructions

  1. Fill a medium sauce pot halfway up with water and set it on the stove to boil. You don't want to use a pot that is too deep, as you want the mason jar to be able to sit in the water without getting any water inside of the jar.

  2. Add the beeswax, coconut oil and almond oil to the mason jar. Once the pot of water is boiling, use your jar lifter to set the mason jar down so it's sitting inside the boiling water. As the jar heats up, the ingredients inside the jar will melt. Use your chopstick to stir everything together. Once the mixture is clear and melted, use your jar lifter to remove it from the heat. Stir in the peppermint essential oil with your chopstick.

  3. Open all of your containers and lay them right side up on some paper towels. Set the lids aside. Once you are able to handle your jar without scalding yourself (I still recommend using an oven glove), pour the liquid lip balm evenly into the containers.

  4. When the lip balm has cooled it will become solid. At this point, it's ready for use, and you can screw the lids back on.

Recipe Notes

Not into peppermint? Make any kind of balm you like by subbing in your favorite essential oil, or leaving it out entirely.

Want a tinted lip balm? It's easy. Get out your favorite lip color, scrape a bit off of the tip (the more you add, the richer the color), and add it to your wax and oils as they are melting. Make sure to stir once the oil comes to temperature as it will make the color more even.
