This HGTV Star Thinks You Should Have Fewer Kitchen Cabinets — Here’s Why
If you’re updating your kitchen, cabinets are a big part of the planning. You might wonder which color to paint your cabinets next, what hardware is trending, for example. But one HGTV star suggests pausing before you jump into installing new cabinets for one very important reason: to prevent My Lottery Dream Home International,” where he shows listings to European lottery winners who want to pour their profits into a new home. Llewelyn-Bowen feels that the kitchen is the heart of the home, but one thing he doesn’t believe belongs in it is an abundant amount of storage that creates clutter more often than not.
“We all know that we store the amount that we have storage to store it in, the minute you start not having the storage, you start storing less,” Llewelyn-Bowen told our friends at Apartment Therapy. If people are going to start panicking about [needing] so much storage, it’s like I bet you don’t, I really, genuinely bet you don’t.”
Llewelyn-Bowen doesn’t identify as a minimalist — as you can tell from his Instagram — but for him, surrounding yourself only with things that give you pleasure is most important. “Forget minimalism, forget maximalism, actually what we all need to be doing is curating our lives,” Llewelyn-Bowen explained. “We need to e making spaces that are the museums of our personality, and that’s absolutely what people do in the 18th or 19th century.”
So if you find yourself thinking about installing or redoing your kitchen cabinets, pause and think to yourself, do I really need this storage in the first place? Do I actually use or care about the things I’m storing in here? And before you know it, you might find yourself creating a floating shelf instead.
My Lottery Dream Home International airs Fridays at 8/7 central on HGTV.
