Here’s What Changes in the Kitchen When You Have Teens
One day you will look up and your little kid will have turned into a tall (sometimes grumpy, possibly a little hairy), seemingly constantly hungry person. The juice boxes and squeeze-y yogurts of yesterday will no longer be a satisfying snack, and a recipe marked “Serves 4” won’t actually be enough to serve your family of four. Here’s what changes in your kitchen — and your routine — when you have a teenager (or a few!).

Why You Actually Need 15 Spatulas in Your Life
Full disclosure before we begin: I actually have more spatulas than what’s pictured here.  A lot more. I have a spatula issue, it would seem, and it’s not always pretty (I say looking in my kitchen drawers), but I can’t stop.  I use many, many spatulas a day, and over the years have learned which one to reach for when. Because each one does a particular thing (or two) better than another.

Recipe: Tortilla-Crusted Tilapia with Sriracha Mayo
Never have I experienced such immediate success with a fish dish in my house than with this tortilla-crusted tilapia with Sriracha sauce. Seconds were requested. It was also requested later the same week. This is such a good example of how when you match a food that kids like (tortilla chips) with a food that needs a bit of support (fish), sometimes brilliant things happen.

Recipe: One-Skillet Cheesy Beef and Macaroni
This isn’t a very sophisticated recipe, but it’s also the recipe my husband eats as if he will be fasting for the following week. His eyes get kind of teary whenever I make this; he’ll show up for dinner early when he knows it’s on the menu. It’s nothing new under the sun, but once you try this delightful stovetop dish, you will understand the deepest meaning of the word crowd-pleaser. And it all cooks in one skillet. Even the pasta, which cooks right in the sauce!

7 Things to Ask Your Kids at Dinner Beyond “How Was Your Day?”
You’ve taken to heart the importance of the family dinner. You meal planned, you carved out the time to cook, you got everyone to the table at the same time. You are feeling pretty good — and you should. The Family Dinner: You did it! But why is getting information out of your kids so hard? You’re interested, you’re available, but there’s not a whole lot of repartee going on.

The $14 Unitasker I Really Wanted to Hate (but Totally Love)
As a food writer, I see tons of new products, ingredients, trends, and so on. I usually don’t pay too much attention to them. (There are so many gimmicks out there!) But sometimes, they resurface so many times, you kind of have to take notice. And sometimes, I’m glad that’s the case! I am in general not a fan of tools designed for one task.

6 Things That Japan Taught Me I Really Need in My Kitchen
When people find out I just got home from a two-week trip to Japan with my mom, they invariably say, “I’m so jealous! It’s totally on my bucket list.” And I say, “Yes, up until a few weeks ago I was on your side of this conversation!” I have spent my whole life wanting to go there, and for a recent big birthday (cough) my mom made it happen. It totally lived up to expectations: the temples, the culture, the beauty, and, of course, the food.

The Seemingly Unnecessary $13 Tool That’ll Always Have a Place in My Kitchen
I know many of you are right there with me when I say that I don’t have much patience for highly specialized kitchen tools. Who can give up that valuable kitchen real estate? As a city dweller, I peacefully parted ways with my pineapple corer after a few years of shoving it around in the drawer, and have no trouble passing up strawberry hullers. But when I was gifted a small vegetable slicer made by OXO, my initial skeptical response was quickly proven wrong.

Recipe: Cheesy Pizza Portobello Mushrooms
Mushrooms are a mainstay of many a vegetarian’s diet, as they are substantial, have great texture,
and provide that elusive and desirable umami flavor we all crave — especially when meat isn’t part of the program. Maybe you haven’t cooked with mushrooms much, or thought about them as a main course, but you should — mushrooms are a great food to love, and a pretty important one if you are looking for hearty, meatless meals.

Recipe: Chicken in Orange Sauce
This is one of those dishes that makes you feel quite pleased with yourself. Fast, easy, healthy, and more delicious than Chinese takeout – a series of winning propositions. You can prep pretty much all the ingredients ahead of time, making this a fantastic last-minute weeknight dinner. The sweetness in the sauce makes this a dish that normally picky eaters will lean into. There’s plenty of sauce, too, which you’ll be happy about as you spoon it over hot rice or quinoa.
