Tired of White Subway Tile? You’ll Love This Moody Backsplash Trend.
I’m very into tile. I have favorite kinds of tile. I watch tile trends. I have joked about starting a blog all about tile (it’s not really a joke, though). You may think of tile as a dull subject, but that’s where you’d be wrong.
There’s always something new in the tile world, some new shape or texture or color or configuration. Lately, I am very into the look of matte black tile paired with black grout. It’s sophisticated, it’s modern, it doesn’t show dirt — a win all around. (Another good look: We’re Totally Obsessed With This Tiled Backsplash Trend.)

1. Small, skinny subway tiles
From Elle Decoration via SF Girl by Bay, I bring you this kitchen backsplash with skinny black mosaic tiles set in black grout. The shape is like a smaller, skinnier version of a subway tile and I just love the fun texture this combo creates.
2. Square tiles
This modern kitchen from Est Living features square tiles (why don’t more people use square tiles?!) and I’m into the all-black cabinets, appliances, and shelves. One note for all of these kitchens, though, it really helps if you have great natural light. You know, in order to keep things from getting too dark.
3. Herringbone tile
This example, from Active Kitchens, might be my favorite of all because of the way it uses matte black beveled subway tile to enhance the textural effect of the black-on-black tile. By setting in a herringbone pattern, the tiles zig and zag around the wall for a lively effect.
