Fava beans are in season right now, and with the weather getting warmer, it's a good time to fire up the grill. I pulled mine out last week, and after acquiring a big bag of fresh fava beans at the farmer's market, I decided to throw some on the grill. Result: easy and delicious!
After washing some fava bean pods, place them in a bowl and toss them with enough olive oil to coat the pods. Or, you can spray each pod with canola oil. Place them on the grill and allow each side to blacken. When the beans start pushing their way out of the pod, they're done.
Place in a bowl and allow them to cool enough to the point where you can handle them, but still warm. You should be able to easily pop the beans out of the pods easily. In a smaller bowl, add some olive oil, fresh lemon juice, and salt, and mix well. Add the grilled fava beans to this and toss.
Enjoy! This goes well with a grilled steak and some wine or beer.

Oh yes, I will be bringing a sack full of favas to the Memorial Day cookout I'm invited to. Thanks for the brilliant idea! I don't have a grill, so I never think of simple things like this. The broiler just ain't the same!

This might be a silly question, but it looks like you aren't shelling the beans after removing them from the pod... are you just eating the beans with their jackets on? How does that impact taste/texture of the favas?
http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/grilled-fava-beans-recipe.html I found this one a year ago. The recipes are very similar. They are very tasty. I seasoned my olive oil with sea salt and Italian Seasoning.
bberry, the jackets are not even noticeable. I do this on a grill pan on the stove when the bbq is not available.
The question of the jackets impacting on taste and texture depends on how old/mature the bean is - if the bean has been left to grow very big and fat, then sometimes the jacket can taste a bit bitter, and the skin is tough to bite/eat. It's more of a problem at the end of the season, than at the start.
