This is the time of year we start to think, wistfully, of burnt toasted marshmallows, flaming on sticks. But we can't exactly build a fire on our back porch, so what's a city-dweller to do? Pull out the gas grill, of course.
We pulled the grate off our gas grill last night, then lit it up and huddled around in the crisp night air with some friends. We roasted lots and lots of marshmallows, and then sandwiched them between those chewy chocolate featherweight cookies. (Much better than crunchy S'mores, in our opinion.)
The gas grill makes a great substitute for a campfire, when it comes to marshmallows! Do you ever toast marshmallows on your gas (or charcoal!) grill? What's your favorite S'mores combination?

I love that you did a story on this. I love roasting marshmellows over my gas grill. I also use to roast them over the electric coils of my stove when my apartment didn't have a gas stove. Nothing beats a toasted marsh.
I remember at school camp, we lined up a bunch of marshmallows on the edge of our bunks and used bbq lighter to set them all on fire.
Children can be so naughty.
I roast over my electric stove from time to time when I get a craving. Usually the side that has the skewer/fork holding the marshmallow doesn't quite get browned enough, but doesn't bother me!
In my house we would roast mini-marshmallows on toothpicks over a candle. I loved it as a kid. You get all the marshmallow taste, you won't eat yourself sick and it can be done when the power goes out!
I love roasting marshmallows over the sterno I keep for my fondue pot. Also awesome when you've made chocolate fondue, and then you can use that with a marshmallow for a s'more!
And if you aren't lucky enough to have a gas range, don't want to use the electric coils you can pop them under the broiler, mmmmmmm
alice88wa!!! My wonderful grandmother and I used to do this too, when I was a little girl, but we used nutpicks. I don't have grandchildren but I do have little great nieces and I am looking forward to doing it with them some day too.
...or you can avoid all that hassle and just do it on your stove. So long as it's gas, not electric.
Whose lovely green/olive knit sweater is that? And if you remember, where did it come from? From the short glimpse I can see in the photo, I already love it. :)
We have a patio table setup with a table top propane heater. We keep it up year round - we have family memebers that still smoke, and outside is their only choice. It's like this one:

If you'll notice, it has a largish gap in the grid area at the top - a marshmallow on a stick fits there perfectly. You can sit at the table in the radiant heat and and twirl the stick and toast them perfectly this way.
I do this regularly on my gas stove with the marshmallow shoved on the end of a chopstick. It's very high class.
Teehee. My mom will do this occasionally (she's obsessed with marshmallows), but she learned the trick from me - I've been roasting hot dogs over the gas stove for years!!
I keep suggesting this to my boyfriend, but he just laughs at me. Not that I actually love s'mores all that much, but I just like the idea of friends huddled around the stove.

Sometimes I roast mine over my electric stove with a fork, it works really well. Toasted marshmallows and Petite Ecolier chocolate covered cookies make pretty great s'mores.
