Am I the only one who feels a slow, warming sensation begin to work its way through my body when I look at impeccably organized drawers? The junk drawer in my kitchen doesn't look like this, but oh how I wish it would. It'll come as no surprise that the drawers above are from Martha Stewart, but I was pleased to realized her secret: modular units instead of all-in-one drawer organizers. Yes!

Small modular units in different sizes are so much more adaptable than one big organizer block with pre-assigned areas. Get the sizes you need, and don't worry about fitting that all-in-one organizer into your drawer.

Modular organizers are awesome. When we moved into our house I quickly realized that our tiny kitchen drawers would have trouble accommodating standard cutlery trays leading us to discover the joys of modular. We have the kind that can also stack and slide on top of each other too.
how many pairs of scissors does a person need?
This looks great although I'm depending on a Chinese apothecary and AT's great idea to use a spice rack for small items. @Kristawn it's funny we need a zillion scissors. I often cut my own hair (pair one), use it to cut open raw duck I cook for my chronically ill cat (pair two that has to be put in dishwasher), save one for fabric sewing (pair three) one in my crafts drawer (pair four) and finally for office use (five). Sad, right?
I can understand lots of scissors (I can never find them when I need them), but five sets of measuring cups???? ha!
I agree on the "kitchen drawer" comments. Maybe this drawer is from a small boutique type eatery, or a home caterer. That does seem like a lot of duplicates. But the clear organization and symmetry make my heart sing! EMMI, we have lots of scissors for multiple uses, too, but we don't store them all together. They generally live near where they get used.
I too, feel a "slow, warming sensation" in my heart when I see a well-organized drawer. I recently outfitted my kitchen drawers with modular organizers to separate stainless utensils by size/type, and it has CHANGED MY LIFE. No more rooting around through a stuffed drawer, or not being able to open it because something has angled upward and gotten caught!
Psh, guys I have like 5 sets of measuring cups and want more. I have about a set and a half split up to live in the jars of flour and the like (a cup in the flour, a half in the sugar, a third in the brown sugar, etc for cornmeal and masa and wheat flour and rice and whatever). And if the one that lives in the jar isn't the right measurement for what I'm making, obvs I need others.
This isn't including my collection of liquid measuring cups, or spoons! :)
I think I remember Martha showing these images on her show and saying they were the drawers from the company offices/studio/test kitchen. So it would stand to reason that multiple people would need to use any of these items at the same time, therefore the multiples of things like scissors and measuring cups and spoons. And even if they were from her home, it's clear she has a multi-person staff on hand there too, also necessitating multiples of basic tools.
My favorite junk drawer organizer is the garbage can.
I came up with a great idea over time as we moved from one place to the next which has come through in our current house which we designed and had built - no kitchen drawers. Sounds absurd, I know! But it's true, there is not one single drawer and I couldn't be happier in that I don't have the junk to deal with ever!
@andreafahy - that sounds crazy...I would love to see photos of how that works!
these are not good examples of junk drawers. a junk drawer is, by definition a disorganized drawer full of things you do not need but might one day need, and so save, until some future date when you throw the item away saying "I should have looked here before I bought that again. I knew I had one of those! Oh well! *chuck*"
