• Other highlights: This cookbook makes me sigh with contentment — and also with a bit of lustful envy. It’s one of those books that makes you want to be where these lovely people are and eat what these lovely people are eating. At least we can manage one of these! Karen’s photography and tasteful style is, as always, something in which to revel and luxuriate.

I do really love the way this book is organized. Rather than chapters, Karen has divided the book into Morning, Noon, Afternoon, and Evening, with a handful of gatherings within each section. In “Morning,” we have a menu for breakfast on the beach and a winter brunch, while “Afternoon” offers a whiskey feast, and “Evening” has the perfect menu for a friendly dinner upstate (New York, of course). The menus are simple and seasonal, rarely overcomplicated, and always exceedingly well-thought-out. They are the kinds of meals you really could see yourself sharing with friends.

Now if only I could find that charming woodland glen on page 93, everything would be perfect.
