I recently came across a 2006 NPR article on famous fiction writers and their signature drinks, which sent me down a rabbit hole looking back at the history of this pairing. In celebration of Cocktail Week on The Kitchn, here are 10 writers and the boozy concoctions they drank and wrote about.
Ernest Hemingway: The Mojito - Hemingway is associated with a number of cocktails (he was, after all, a heavy drinker), but none more so than the Mojito. According to Hemingway & Bailey's Bartending Guide, the mojito was invented at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba, where Hemingway drank them.Kitchn Post: Icy Cool Green Tea Mojitos

Ian Fleming: The Vesper Martini - In Fleming's Bond series, the Vesper Martini is the first drink Bond ever orders - and the only time he orders it. The Vesper differs from Bond's standard cocktail of choice, the martini, in that it uses both gin and vodka. Bond would later be known for ordering vodka martinis. Edna St. Vincent Millay: The "Between the Sheets" - The story goes that Edna St. Vincent Millay, while writing and drinking late one night with Edmund Wilson and the poet John Peale Bishop, asked the men to hold her in their arms, one holding her lower half, the other her upper. Thus, the seductive "Between the Sheets" cocktail, which is basically a Sidecar with rum.

John Steinbeck: The Jack Rose - Also known as "Jersey Lightning," the Jack Rose is for "the brandy drinker who also happen[s] to be a champion of the working class," according to Hemingway & Bailey's Bartending Guide. Tennessee Williams: The Ramos Gin Fizz - Are you from New Orleans? Apparently folks there still drink this famous Southern cocktail in honor of Williams. The drink was featured many times in his writings. The standard recipe contains egg, cream, lemon and lime juice, sugar, gin (of course), and a bit of orange flower soda water.Kitchn Post: Ramos Gin Fizz and Dead Reckoning (1947)

Great post
After reading The Long Goodbye, my friend and I tried a gimlet per Chandler's instructions and then tried making a gimlet with fresh lime juice instead. In the taste test the fresh lime juice won hands down. I really want to like Rose's lime juice, but I like my cocktails to be tart more than sweet so I haven't yet found a drink I like it in.
Any cocktail that is well made with quality ingredients. These days I'm favoring Moscow Mules and Tom Collins.
We had a lot of fun using this post as a kind of pop culture quiz. I had my MIL and husband try to guess the cocktails based on 1) the author, and (if they didn't get it), 2) the recipe.
Got to go with the Sazerac right now. Rinse martini glass with absinthe, muddle bitters with Peychaud, stir in rye whiskey and ice, pour into the chilled and absinthe-rinsed glass, garnish with brandy cherries and an orange peel, and enjoy. Thanks to Geer Street Garden in Durham NC for tipping me off to a southern classic.
My favorite cocktail is The Harrington. I love The Harrington at a local Italian restaurant, Galletto Ristorante in Modesto, CA.
I don't have the measurements, but they make theirs with Crystal Head Vodka, Cointreau, Yellow Chartruese and a flamed orange peel. Lovely!

This article might be a contender for one of my favorites ever done by AT. Most likely because I'm always looking for inspiration while writing my book; especially the kind that can be sipped slowly.
As you point out, Hemingway is remembered for a lot of drinking, however one could argue he is remembered more for the daiquiri - there is one named for him - the Hemingway Daiquiri.
The Vesper is remarkable as Bond invents the recipe on the fly at the table while gambling. It differs from a martini in that instead of vermouth, Lillet is used. At that time Lillet was bitter, made with cinchona bark which contains quinine (Kina Kina in Peruvian, thus 'Kina Lillet"). qinchona bark. The vodka adds more punch, but no flavor. And its a remarkably dry martini - 8:1
Vodka & tonic, lots of lime.
It used to be gin & tonic until I tested allergic to juniper....Let's hear it for Vitamin V!
I'm curious to know where to find this info, and if they list the favorite or "signature" drinks of Raymond Carver, Charles Bukowski or William S. Burroughs?
Ignore the above reply&question, i found it but now am curious why you only listed the ten when there's a short list of twenty with several authors IMO much bigger,better or with a more interesting drink choice than these ten? (BTW Raymond Carver's was a Bloody Mary, Charles Bukowski's was a "Boilermaker" and WIlliam S. Burroughs was a vodka and coke.). Either way, thanks for spuring my interest with the article.
Most Hemingway scholars think the quote on the wall is a fake, and some wonder if Hemingway ever even drank a mojito, as he didn't really drink sugary drinks.
A rather dry mojito -- barely any sugar, good rum, loads of fresh mint. Mmm!
And anything made with dark rum, as long as there is no cola involved. Oh, and a piña colada sprinkled with cinnamon.
Rum is definitely my hard liquor of choice.
Just one woman on this list? Damn shame.
A whisky sour 90% of the time.
Though right now I really enjoy anything with St-Germain in it!
