I Can’t Stop Sipping This “Cowboy Hat” Cocktail (It’s My New Favorite Way to Drink Tequila)
With the recent release of the second part of the fifth season of Yellowstone, the popular show is making its way into people’s kitchens (as well as their TVs). The upcoming cocktail book, The Official Yellowstone Bar Book, comes out November 26 and is perfect for fans of the show.
The Western drama has garnered quite the following, and there are many food products — from Rip’s chocolaty-tasting coffee line to the smoky and savory rubs and spices — inspired by the series. Although I’ve never watched Yellowstone, the hype draws me in. So when I came across the trendy Cowboy Hat cocktail inspired by the series, I knew I had to try it.
How to Make the Yellowstone Cowboy Hat Cocktail
Fill a Collins glass with your preferred type of ice — I used medium-sized cubes so they wouldn’t melt too quickly and water down the drink. Next, cut a lime into thin slices. Then, place two to three of those lime wheels inside the glass on the inner edges. Next, add half an ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice, half an ounce of agave, two dashes of Peychaud bitters, and one ounce of tequila, and gently stir it all together. Then slowly top the drink off with four ounces of Prosecco.
My Honest Review of the Yellowstone Cowboy Hat Cocktail Recipe
It took only a few minutes to stir two cocktails, which I loved because I’m always looking for quick and easy drinks to serve my friends when they visit. I keep a pretty stocked bar in my home with lots of bitters (my fiancé is an avid collector), so I had no issues spotting Peychaud’s on my cart. The rest of the ingredients in this drink are also staples that I tend to keep stocked in my kitchen.
Quick background on Peychaud’s bitters: They’re notorious in the New Orleans mixology scene and used in a famous cocktail called the Sazerac. It mimics the flavor of Maraschino cherries with a hint of star anise. You can easily find bottles at most stores that sell spirits.
As soon as you take a sip, this Cowboy Hat cocktail packs an assertive punch of citrusy flavors. The Peychaud’s bitters and agave infuse this drink with delicately sweet notes. And for the grand finale, the bubbles from Prosecco give this libation an ultra-crisp and fizzy finish. While I’ve never sat down to watch an episode of Yellowstone, if the show is as cutting-edge as this recipe then it’s worth the hype.
Tips for Making the Yellowstone Cowboy Hat Cocktail
- Swap the Peychaud’s bitters. If you don’t have access to Peychaud’s bitters, you can also use Angostura bitters, old-fashioned bitters, vermouth, or dry sherry; just keep in mind the final flavor will vary slightly.
- Make it frothy. If you add half of one egg white to this recipe and shake it vigorously instead of stirring, you’ll end up with a fluffy topping for your cocktail.
- Upgrade the rim. To enhance the citrusy notes of your libation even further, create a salt or Tajin rim.
