Words of Joy: The Creator of Peanuts on Love and Chocolate
Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Peanuts (Charlie Brown! Snoopy! That too-smart-for-her-own-good Lucy!), was one of the most influential cartoonists of all time — and he might have inspired people to eat a little more chocolate, too.

Although it’s basically impossible to track down where or when Schulz famously said (or wrote?) this quote, it is indeed all over the internet and generally believed to have come from him. And even though we never knew him personally, we spent years reading his comic strips and we can totally see him sharing this sentiment.

He’s saying that as long as you have love, you have life’s most crucial thing. The chocolate just sweetens the deal (pun intended!). And he’s right. When doesn’t chocolate make things better? It’s what we nibble on in the afternoon when work is hard. It’s what we melt and dunk fruit into in order to make healthy stuff taste better. It’s what people give to their significant others when an apology is in order.
Of course, this general idea still works for people who don’t like chocolate (who are you people? Do you exist?). Just sub in cake, cheese, bacon, wine … the list goes on. The point being that, whatever your favorite pick-me-up-when-things-are-tough treat is, indulging a little now and then can only be a good thing.
Pretty wise (and free!) words. But that’s not surprising, considering this comes from the guy who made his fortune writing about a lovable underdog and his dog — and a girl who gave advice for five cents a pop.
