Where to Buy Local Foods In Chicago During the Winter

Locally grown foods can make great gifts, especially since they're 100% usable. Here is a guide from AT: Chicago to buying locally in Chicago. In winter, we don't have the luxury of open-air farmers' markets, but there are still lots of places to buy local. This brief roundup is just a start... add your suggestions in the comments below. 1) Irv and Shelly's Fresh Picks provides year-round delivery of locally grown organic foods. You can pick and choose products, or sign up for their Fresh Picks Box delivered weekly or bi-weekly to your door.

2) Oakville Organics delivers local produce to your home, and takes pick-up orders as well. Their warehouse is located on the North Shore, and they claim to have the largest selection of Midwestern kosher organic meat.

3) Fox & Obel (near Navy Pier) carries a lot of locally-made specialty foods (as well as imports). Their Windy City Favorites Gift Basket features products made in Chicago.

4) The Marion Street Cheese Market in Oak Park has about 125 varieties of yummy cheeses, half of which are made here in the Midwest.

5) The Chicago Honey-Coop is staffed by under-employed Chicagoans who make organic honey in the North Lawndale Neighborhood. Click here to find out where to buy it.

6) Chicago's Green City Market at the Notebaert Nature Museum continues (Wednesdays and Saturdays) through December 22nd, so there are still a couple of days (12/19 and 12/22 from 7:30am - noon) to buy locally grown foods until the market reopens in May.
