How Do Decide Whether to Fix an Appliance or Buy a New One?

Q: How do you decide when to invest in fixing broken kitchen appliances and when it's worth it to buy a new one? My KitchenAid stand mixer is a roughly 15-year-old hand-me-down from my mom, and recently stopped working. I can't figure out why.

If I was to get it fixed, I don't know where to take it (or send it) to have it fixed it, or how much fixing it might cost. Is it worth it to look into fixing it, or is it time to invest in a new one?

Editor: Readers, have you ever gone through a similar situation? How do you decide when it's worth fixing an old appliance, and when it's time to retire it and buy a new one?
