What’s Causing My Flat Cookies?

Q: The last few times I’ve made Toll House cookies, they’ve come out of the oven flat, about 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick. What am I doing wrong?

Editor: Spreading cookies are usually a sign that the dough is too warm as it goes in the oven. Be sure to preheat the oven, start with a cool pan, and pop the tray of unbaked cookies in the oven right away. You can also try chilling the dough before baking.

If that doesn’t result in favorable outcomes, I’d use a bit less butter. But do this after double checking the oven temperature and making sure you’re measuring your ingredients out correctly — especially the flour!
