What Does Your Kitchen Say About You?

What Does Your Kitchen Say About You?

If someone were to take the doors off all your kitchen cabinets and snap a photo, what would that image say about you? That's what Dutch photographer Erik Klein Wolterink explores in Kitchen Portraits, a photography project and the subject of his new book by the same name.

As Wolterink tells Slate, he doesn't even like kitchens that much. "I'm interested in the way we live, our daily environment, what surrounds us, the everyday stuff we normally don't see or pay attention to," he says. And that is what ultimately drew him into the kitchens of 11 different people living in Amsterdam, all with diverse backgrounds. For authenticity's sake, he asked the participants not to clean their kitchen before the shoot so he could photograph it as it looked on a daily basis.

To create the photos you see above, he removed all doors and then shot each individual cupboard, drawer, or built-in appliance. Then he took those frames and combined them into one composite image, with the details remaining sharp and in focus. The result is "a remarkable detailed documentary about cultural habits," as the blurb for his book says.
