Q: As someone who has always been pastry bag-phobic, I have had a few occasions to use one in the last month and have been pleasantly surprised at the results. I’m now thinking I’d like to be able to create a nice-looking birthday cake, or something on that level.

I browsed some cake decorating blogs, but what I found wasn’t to my taste and/or skill level. Can anyone recommend a website or book that features easy cake or cupcake designs with classy colors and natural-looking decorations?

I’m not interested in cartoon characters or “novelty” cakes in garish colors. Natural dyes would be a bonus, but I’m not sure if that’s too much to ask for. Thanks!

Also, psst — be on the lookout for The Kitchn’s very own Baking School coming up in October. We won’t be tackling cake decorating in-depth, but we will cover the basics of technique and tools.

Readers, do you have some good resources on cake decorating?
