The biggest retailer in the United States is about to get even bigger. Walmart just announced that they are planning to build or convert approximately 150 stores over the next five years. Plus, the grocery giant is planning to remodel 650 stores across the country, creating tens of thousands of jobs, beginning in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia. According to Walmart, the company employs about 1.6 million people all over the country and that number is only going to keep growing.

The upgraded stores will feature better layouts, a larger selection of products, and new technology that will help make the customer experience more convenient. With sustainability top of mind, equipment will be more energy efficient, including more sustainable refrigerants. There is also a plan in place to implement electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lots.

“Customers love this concept in the places we’ve already rolled it out, and we’re excited to transition more and more of our fleet,” wrote John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart in the press release. “We’re proud that improving our stores also has a tangible impact in the communities we serve. What a win it is to invest in America, grow our business, and move toward a more sustainable future — all at the same time.”

Walmart currently has more than 4,600 locations across the United States, but hasn’t opened a new store since 2021. However, the brand remodeled 117 stores across the nation that includes upgrades like new checkout processes and a refreshed design.

Sam’s Club, owned by Walmart, announced last year that they are also planning to expand over the next few years by opening about 30 more locations. If you don’t already have a Walmart or Sam’s Club near you, that may be about to change.
