Traveling can have a Grass is Greener effect on our eating. Oh, how I wish I could spend my lunches in Florence, lingering for hours over marinated artichokes and fresh pasta! But what does my Italian friend most miss from his days in the US? Nacho Cheese Doritos. And bringing him a few bags with me when I visited Florence this spring was better than any artisanal foods I could have stuffed in my carry-on. Lesson? Give your friends what they want!
I wouldn't recommend just springing Doritos on any unsuspecting friend, however, but many of us have cravings that can't be satisfied locally. Whether it's peanut butter, marshmallows or even aluminum foil, bringing a desired American item for the kitchen makes an ideal hostess gift.
