Vintage Food PSA Posters: Eating and Cooking Tips from Uncle Sam
Remember this Food: Don’t Waste It poster that Anjali wrote about back in January? It was created in 1917 by the U.S Food Administration as part of a national effort to get people to reduce their consumption of certain staples during World War I. I’ve since come across a number of other food public service announcement posters from that time, and it’s a fascinating how relevant and, well, modern, some of them sound.
A number of these posters can be found in Eating with Uncle Sam: Recipes and Historical Bites from the National Archives ($24.55 from Amazon). Maria Popova of Brainpicker compiled a selection of them in a recent post, and I’m grateful to her for pointing them out.
Isn’t it interesting to see how relevant some of this stuff still is? As Anjali noted back in January, these ideas to conserve, be mindful of sugar, make ingredients go a long way, etc. seem modern to us now, but simply prove that everything comes full circle.
