What challenge have you overcome in your kitchen? Working mostly on the weekends we were able to see the job to completion in about 6 weekends. The whole update cost us about $1,000. Initially we hated our countertop, and planned to replace it. But after the rest of the kitchen got an overhaul, the improvements actually made the old countertop look brand new.

What’s the story of your kitchen?
We felt that the arched oak cabinets, pink walls, and fake-wood-linoleum didn’t match the rest of our 1930s pre-war apartment. We couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars to redo a space that had pretty good bones, so we decided to DIY it. We painted the cabinets and walls, attached new hardware, replaced the floor, backsplash, toekick and base mouldings, installed under cabinet lighting, and found a small table, stools, decor and window treatments.

What is your favorite meal to cook here?
We love to cook, and one of our favorite things to do is cook up a brunch or some home-made sauce and lasagna for our friends or family.
