Making Mini-Cakes Just Got Easier with This Ingenious Hack
Luxury cake artist and instructor Krystal “Jade” Graham of Jade’s Cake Studio in Long Island, New York, is serving up a worthy hack and some serious motivation in the process. In an Instagram reel, Graham shares a tutorial for turning cupcakes into an adorable mini cake using a revolving cake stand, offset spatula, and bench scraper. Rather than explain what she’s doing, Graham decided to take this moment to offer some words of wisdom for fellow small business owners (or people in general) who may be afraid to chase their dreams.
The post is captioned, “There will NEVER be another YOU in this saturated market. What makes you stand out from the rest?” As Graham creates the mini cake from three cupcakes, a voiceover plays describing a story of someone who came up with an amazing idea but felt like she couldn’t pursue it because someone had already done it. To that, the voiceover continues, “Didn’t Rihanna create Fenty like there wasn’t MAC? How many McDonald’s and Burger Kings are across from each other like they don’t sell the same food? The market is oversaturated but it don’t have you, baby. If God gave you the gift your gift gonna pop differently from theirs.”
As the voiceover goes on, Graham lays a dollop of frosting onto a revolving cake stand using an offset spatula, then places the first cupcake on it. She frosts the top and sides of the cupcake, spinning as she goes and using a bench scraper to smooth the sides. Once the first cupcake is completely covered in frosting, she places another cupcake on top (upside down) and covers it in frosting using the same process. After the two cupcakes are frosted, Graham inserts a dowel through the center of the two cupcakes to stabilize the mini cake. A third cupcake then is placed on top of the stack and covered in frosting as well.
By the end of the video, we feel ready to both take on the world and practice our cake-making skills. A commenter pointed out that this is an easy way to practice the technique, rather than starting with a full-size cake. And honestly, this just might be the only way we need to do this from here on out.
