This Viral Fruit Bowl Instantly Decluttered My Kitchen Countertops (I’m Obsessed!)
Now that my kitchen is fully stocked, I can finally lean back and admire the finished product. Just a few months ago, I was still working on acquiring all of the appliances and organizers I would need to make the space functional. For a long time, I didn’t have a dedicated fruit bowl, a fact that was more annoying than you might expect. Instead, my roommates and I were using a mixing bowl to hold unrefrigerated produce, and although it was mostly fine, the bowl wasn’t nearly big enough to hold three people’s bananas, avocados, mangos, and tomatoes. Not only that, but ripe fruit would often slip down to the bottom of the bowl, become forgotten, and subsequently spoil, leading to a lot of waste. And, frankly, the stainless steel bowl didn’t look that cute sitting on our counter.
I got to searching for a better alternative and almost instantly decided on the Just Ripe fruit bowl from Uncommon Goods. I’d seen it on the internet before, and when it popped up in my Google search results, it was a done deal. I think it goes without saying that this upgrade is infinitely better than using a mixing bowl to store fruit.
What is the Just Ripe Fruit Bowl?
Designed by artists Heather and Myles Geyman, this fruit bowl features a built-in hook to keep your bananas elevated (allowing them to ripen evenly) and easy to grab, a bamboo lid to balance all of the fruit that’s ripe and edible, and a vented glass bowl to hold anything that’s not ready to eat yet. If you don’t want the bowl out on display, it can fit in your lower cabinets, but we have a feeling you’ll want to showcase it on your counters. It frees up space in the fridge and cabinets, and having it visible will help you remember when it’s time to eat each fruit, minimizing waste. Additionally, the bowl comes with all the hardware you need for assembly, and I found it easy to put together. Some Uncommon Goods shoppers have complained about their bowls arriving with scuff marks. Mine did have some minor scratches at the bottom of the glass when it arrived, but once I filled it with produce, they were no longer visible.
Why I Love the Just Ripe Fruit Bowl
I was surprised at just how large the fruit bowl actually was upon unboxing it. Of course, its dimensions are listed on the website, but it looks much more substantial in real life than it does in photos. If you’re very limited on counter space, it might be too bulky, but I keep mine on my kitchen cart. Besides, I like that it’s big, because that means it can hold a lot. The elevated hook is also so helpful—bananas are some of the quickest fruits to spoil, so this keeps them from becoming crushed under other produce. We keep ripe fruit atop the bamboo lid, as instructed, while unripe items go inside the big glass bowl underneath. (And between you and me, I like that my roommates now slip their smelly onions into the bowl, so they don’t lie out on the counter.)
It also doesn’t hurt that the bowl’s bamboo lid and hook extension match my kitchen cabinets. It’s undeniably stylish all around, which is sometimes hard to come by in kitchen storage solutions. My roommate even called the bowl a “work of art.” Its glass and wood are thick and durable, not to mention easy to clean. In short, I can’t recommend this bowl enough. If you have the counter space for it, don’t think twice.
