Bananas are, arguably, the best fruit to always have on-hand. They’re healthy, more filling than, say, berries, and they come pre-packaged so you can take one on the go and not have to wash it before eating. There’s just one downside: Bananas turn brown, like, really fast. You’ll buy a bunch on Sunday, and they’ll be barely edible by the end of the week. Sure, you could freeze them, but that’s not convenient for a grab-and-go snack, plus they’ll still go brown anyway as they defrost. Or, you could put the overripe ones into a smoothie or bread dough, but being forced to use them quickly kinda takes the pleasure out of it. So what are you to do? Resort to buying snacks loaded with artificial preservatives? Find a new go-to fruit? Thankfully, you don’t have to do either. You just have to buy some banana hats from Uncommon Goods and let them work their magic.

What are banana hats, you might ask? As their photo reveals, they’re these seriously adorable caps that you place at the crown of your banana stalk. It goes without saying that their appearance alone will bring a smile to anyone’s face and brighten up your kitchen — but these small accessories, which come in a set of two, actually keep ripe bananas from turning brown sooner than you’d like them to. Each hat sports a two-fold construction: There’s a silicone layer that goes on first and is actually what slows down the absorption of ethylene gas (the thing that causes fruit to ripen). Then, there’s a cute knit cap that goes on top purely for aesthetic purposes (but clearly just as important). You can choose between fun characters, such as a monkey and panda, unicorn and viking, or shark and octopus. At first, $25 might seem like a bit much for such a tiny product, but keep in mind that each cap is completely reusable, and they’ll more than pay for themselves after they save you from having to toss overripe bananas.

After buying a pair for yourself, you might even consider getting another as a gift — that’s what plenty of Uncommon Goods shoppers do, praising the hats’ effectiveness and joyful vibes. “Who knew bananas would stay ripe for so long?” one reviewer wrote. “These things pay for themselves in food waste, AND they look cool.” Indeed, you might never have to throw out a stalk of bananas again after purchasing this clever product. Grab some now, and get excited for unhurried healthy snacking and lots of money saved in the long run.
