One of my favorite ways to dress up vanilla ice cream is with a big spoonful of bright orange mango puree. Sold in big cans at Indian markets, the sweetened fruit sauce turns a simple scoop into a tropical sundae.

My stepfather, who grew up in India, introduced this combination to me, and I have yet to find an ice cream topping I like better. It’s simple enough to be a weekday treat, but unique and pretty enough to be served to guests as well. If you love mango, this dessert is a keeper.

The cans of mango pulp are big, so unless you eat a lot of ice cream, you’ll have plenty left over for mango lassis, mango micheladas, and mango cocktails. It’s also great over plain yogurt.

Have you ever tried this combination? How do you use mango puree?
