I Tried the Brand-New Trader Joe’s Jarred Pasta Sauce, and It’s as “Amazing” as Everyone Says
Pasta is a comfort food for many of us (the Italian staple really does make us happier, according to science!). With marinara, garlic and oil, and pesto as a part of the regular rotation, it’s always exciting to add a new sauce to the mix. Luckily, Trader Joe’s is constantly rolling out new products — and a recent pasta sauce had us especially excited.
The Rosatella Pasta Sauce sounded almost too good to be true, so I went to see what the hype was all about for myself. The 14-ounce jar lives next to the other pasta sauces at the grocer and is currently retailing for $3.99 — a pretty amazing deal. However, the jar only has 3.5 servings, so if you’re cooking for more people, you may need to grab a second container.
The sauce features a base of milk and cream, mixed with tomato paste, onion, garlic, basil, oregano, and Grana Padano PDO cheese. I decided to make this with a bag of Trader Joe’s Red Lentil Sedanini and ultimately cooked the whole bag (who doesn’t love leftovers?). One full jar of the sauce was the perfect amount for all the noodles.
Upon first glance after opening the jar, the sauce seemed to be thicker than your standard marinara. After cooking the pasta and keeping the heat on low, I added the sauce to the pot. I then stirred until the sauce completely coated the noodles and was heated to perfection. The sauce had a creamy and silky texture, similar to vodka sauces you may find in an Italian restaurant.
You can certainly taste the cheese in the sauce, but it isn’t too overpowering. There is also a hint of sweetness from the tomatoes that adds balance. While whipping some of this up with your favorite pasta will undoubtedly be delicious, the sauce could also be a nice base for a homemade pizza — with mozzarella, ricotta, and garlicky spinach, perhaps?
If you’re in need of a comfort meal to have on hand for emergencies, you may want to add this to your pantry.
