Trader Joe’s Summery New Chips Are a Revelation

Raise your hand if you had potato chips for breakfast. I DID! Trader Joe’s new Patio Potato Chips, to be exact. (A breakfast of champions!) Each bag contains a medley of chips — Sea Salt & Vinegar, Delicious Dill, Homestyle Ketchup, and Smokin’ Sweet BBQ — meant to invoke the flavors of a summer barbecue. This literal mixed bag is the perfect solution for indecisive snackers who have major commitment issues in the chip aisle, as well as the kind of person who signs up to bring chips to a potluck.

I’ve been excited about trying these chips ever since the grocer teased their impending release on the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, and let’s just say they lived up to my expectations. The sweet and salty flavors just work — simple as that. It’s so ingenious to combine multiple chip flavors in a single bag!

There’s something so delightful about digging in and not knowing which of the four flavors you’ll pull out. As TJ’s puts it, “Reach in the bag … and let fate decide which chip suits your character.” If you must know, I’m the mustachioed BBQ sheriff. But I happily ate all the complementary flavors, too.

Now that I know the magic of the potato chip medley, no one can stop me from replicating it with other salty snacks I love! As great as these chips taste, though, the disappointment of opening the bag to find that it was mostly air was more than I could bear. I know, I know, the air is supposed to protect the precious chips, but I still hate to see it. My only critique of this new product is that I wish there were more than six ounces of goodness inside.
