Here’s How a Magnet Damaged My $2,000 Fridge
Stainless steel appliances sometimes look like big tin cans in your kitchen. Black stainless steel, on the other hand, is an understated alternative to the traditional glaring silver metal, and a big trend in kitchens these days. It also doesn’t show smudges and fingerprints as readily. I loved everything about them, until I owned one myself.

Maxwell House Is Making a Mrs. Maisel Haggadah
As a certified coffee snob™ of the highest order (I live in Seattle, after all), I am embarrassed to admit I have recently ordered huge quantities of Maxwell House coffee (“Coffee”?) to my house. And I have a promoted tweet to blame for it. Yes, that’s right, the tweet informed me that I could order a Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Passover Haggadah — based off the Amazon Prime Original television show. Never has a marketing ploy been better targeted.

When Costco announced their monthly online-only sales for February, we got super excited about three deals in particular that will give your kitchen a makeover without a complete demo.

I’ve Tested Nearly Every Blender on the Market. Here Are My Favorites.
Every kitchen — no matter its size — needs a blender. A blender can purée a soup, grind nuts, or whip up a salsa. Or, more likely these days, churn out a smoothie for breakfast or an after-school snack. The only problem with shopping for a blender? It’s so darn complicated. Boxes tout 900-watt motors and a certain amount of horsepower, or the number of revolutions per minute. What’s good? What’s not good? And what doesn’t matter at all?

Why You Should Throw Out Your Oven Thermometer
The cake that sunk in the middle or cracked on the top. The roast that came out too rare or dry as a bone. I feel your pain. So, what do you do? Chances are, you run out and buy an oven thermometer the first chance you get. Then, you determine that the actual temperature doesn’t match the one you’ve selected. Next step? You adjust future recipes by upping or lowering the temp setting because you now know that your oven runs hot or cold. Common sense, right? Not so fast.

An Unexpected Use for Your Toaster Oven, According to Eric Ripert
When Eric Ripert, the chef mastermind behind three-Michelin-star seafood restaurant Le Bernardin (and close friend of Anthony Bourdain), tells you how to cook something, it would be best to listen to him. His latest recommendation is probably not one you’re expecting, though. It doesn’t involve any fancy, expensive machinery that you’d only find in a professional kitchen. In fact, all you need is a toaster oven.

6 Things You Didn’t Realize About IKEA Kitchen Cabinets

Earlier this morning, the hosts of a cable news channel morning show struggled to open the tiny doors on their wine-bottle advent calendar and they fumbled with the packaging until the commercial break. The $20 Pro Chef Tool Every Cook Should Own
Restaurant kitchens and home kitchens are both designed for the work of putting food on a plate — but resemblances end there. Restaurant kitchens bristle with the industrial and the oversized: bowls you could bathe a toddler in, medieval vats of hot oil, flat-top griddles with the square footage of a very nice Manhattan kitchen.

VeggiChop Hand-Powered Food Chopper from Chef’n
I’ve talked about this little chopper before, but I wanted to return to it as it has a relatively new and improved design. I really love this chopper. It doesn’t need any electricity, and pulling the cord to make the blades go is actually rather fun. It is wonderful for chopping nuts and herbs and making pesto, sauces, and salsa. It doesn’t mash vegetables to pulp the way higher powered food processors do. I really do use this more frequently than any other food processor.

This Company Wants You to Take a Roast Beef-Scented Bath
There are few greater joys after a long, stressful day than getting home, queueing up a bit of relaxing music, lighting a few candles, and settling in to a freshly drawn, piping-hot bath. What’s the Deal with Copper Nonstick Pans?
You’ve probably seen copper nonstick cookware on late-night infomercials and thought it looks too good to be true! On TV, food glides out and even burnt-on cheese doesn’t stick. You’re led to believe there’s absolutely nothing like it. So what’s the deal? It’s a well-established fact that copper is the best conductor of heat. However, copper cookware, while amazingly beautiful, is prohibitively expensive for most home cooks.

You May Be Using Your Slow Cooker Latches Incorrectly!
Transporting a slow cooker can be a pain — they’re heavy, unwieldy, hot, and prone to spills. But if you’ve made a meal for a potluck or a dip for a tailgate, it’s often easiest (and healthiest, from a food-safety standpoint) to keep the food in the slow cooker instead of transferring it to another container. Slow cooker manufacturers heard consumers, and a few years ago started introducing latches onto their appliances to keep the lids on tight. Yay!

Now Jell-O has just come out with the coolest new idea: Jell-O molds that let kids make edible blocks they can stack into cars, buildings, and animals, and still eat afterwards. Should You Buy a Blender or a Stick Blender? We Can Help You Decide!
In life, there are “stick people” and “jar people.” And people who are both! We’re talking about blenders here. See, a stick blender is very different from a traditional blender with a jar or pitcher. Some home cooks can get by with just one or the other, while super serious smoothie- and soup-makers will say they need both. Of course, there are pros and cons to each type of blender — here they are!

The Best Time to Buy Cast Iron Is in the Summer
No-cook recipes might be the darlings of summer cooking, but we’re also big on cast iron during the warmer months. We love using our cast iron on the grill (like in these delicious recipes) or making simple summer cobblers on the stove (like this tomato one). So, if you’re thinking about adding (or starting) your collection of cast iron cookware, now is definitely the time. Right now Sur La Table is running a cast iron sale that also includes enameled cast iron from Le Creuset.

The Absurd On-Again, Off-Again Relationship I Developed with My Cast Iron Skillet
I had a crush for several months before ever making a move. Then one day, my dreams came true. My crush entered my life, and at last I held a shiny and new (and shockingly heavy) 12-inch Lodge cast iron skillet in my hands.

The $20 Key to Making Perfect Cold Brew Coffee at Home
Iced coffee is one of the best things about summer. It’s refreshing, cooling, and heavily caffeinated. What’s not to love? The only problem is that buying iced coffee from coffee shops can get extremely expensive — especially since it goes down so quickly (you’ll need another cup before you know it!). And cold brew coffee tends to be even more expensive than regular ol’ iced coffee, which is already more expensive than hot coffee!

5 Reasons Every Kitchen Should Have a Digital Scale
One of the reasons I chose a degree in baking and pastry arts rather than a culinary degree — besides the cake, obviously — is that I enjoy the exacting science of weighing sugar and flour, and then watching as a few simple ingredients become a cake or cookies. Baking, to me, is equal parts science and magic. But maybe you’re not quite as obsessed with home baking as I am and so you’ve eschewed the advice that every kitchen should have a scale.

We Updated an Old Appliance with Liquid Stainless Steel — Here’s How It Went
Can this outdated, off-white relic of a stove be transformed into a sleek stainless steel beauty? When I learned about a product designed to replicate the look of stainless steel appliances, I was itching to see if it worked — it just seemed a little too good to be true. Could this paint make appliances blend in a little bit more, or maybe look a little less decrepit? Less almond, at least? For this test, I bought Rust-Oleum’s Stainless Steel, which retails for about $30 on Amazon.

Why a Cookie Spatula Is My Most-Used Kitchen Tool (No, I’m Not a Professional Baker)
I love chocolate chip cookies so much that I have the classic Nestle Tollhouse recipe memorized. At any given point, my roommate and I have all the supplies required to make a batch (and can do the mental math to halve or even quarter the batch if we’re running low on butter). I even have developed my own personal tricks for boosting the cookie quality (add a finishing salt and a little extra vanilla extract, for starters). I own and regularly use a cookie dough freezer tray.

I Got One of Those Expensive Holiday-Themed Le Creusets, and Here’s What I Used It For
The year was 2013. Hanukkah was upon us and people everywhere were losing their minds over the fact that the Festival of Lights would coincide with Thanksgiving for the first time since the 1800s. Sara Moulton on Sexual Harassment in the Food Industry’s “Boys’ Club”
In recent months, many industries have been rocked by stories of sexual harassment, misconduct, and worse. The stories may be more public now, but the events they describe are not new. In many cases, harassment and overt sexism have been pervasive problems that have been dismissed, ignored, swept under the rug, or held as a sort of family secret for decades or longer.

We Finally Found a Broom-and-Dust-Pan Combo That Actually Works!
A few months ago, I lamented here that I haven’t been able to find a winning broom-and-dust-pan combo. To recap: I sweep my floors (almost!) every night, a total necessity with two kids, one of whom is a messy 3-year-old who seems to scatter bits of rice and kale chips in her wake. The Wedding Tradition Nigella Lawson Thinks You Should Skip
A wedding cake is the ultimate special-occasion dessert. One’s own wedding cake is generally considered a once-in-a-lifetime treat, with one notable exception: It’s a long-running tradition for a couple to save the top tier of their wedding cake, freeze it, then eat it a year later to celebrate their one-year anniversary. A lot of people really like that tradition, but it sounds like Nigella Lawson is not a fan.

This Photo of a Completely Peeled Pomegranate Is Weirdly Disturbing
Pomegranates are such a wonderful fruit. They’re full of healthful antioxidants, and they add color and flavor to everything from salads to cocktails. Pomegranates are as good with eggplant as they are with chocolate — or you can just eat them straight and enjoy the way the seeds explode into tart, red juice when you bite into them. Sure, it can be a lot of work to get the seeds out, but all that labor just makes the payoff seem more special.

Cooking Is Going to Change in the Next 10 Years — And That’s a Good Thing
I believe in innovation. Let’s face it — no one wishes we were still gathering wood and stoking our stoves with it or keeping food fresh in a box cooled by ice. This Might Be the Perfect On-the-Go Snack for Your Cat
Squeezy tubes of food are all the rage. They’re easy for people to consume on the go and also make single servings easy to identify. Apparently, these two things are also true in the cat community. Late last year Hartz released a product to the (cat) consumer market that flew under the radar. What once was unheard of is making big rounds on the social media sphere lately because seriously, is there anything cuter than watching a cat eat out of what appears to be a tube of Go-Gurt?

Here’s What a Costco Food Court Looks Like in France
It’s fascinating to see what Costco food courts serve in different countries. The facilities all look more or less the same from one Costco to another, but the food court menus vary pretty widely by location. In Canada the food courts serve poutine; in Britain the food courts serve stuffed baked potatoes and cottage pie. Even France has Costco, and the food courts there sell melty ham and cheese croissants with mustard that look positively delicious.

Is This the Secret to Instant Pot’s Success?
The cult of the Instant Pot shows no sign of stopping. I mean, the machine can make yogurt, and slow cook, and pressure cook, and basically do everything except the dishes (you’ll still need a dishwasher or a good sponge for that, unfortunately). The trendy kitchen appliance’s rise to fame is particularly interesting, however, given the fact that you rarely see any advertising for the product. How did the Instant Pot become so successful so quickly?
