If you’ve ever come across a bag of unsliced hamburger buns and thought, “What’s the point of that?” then I’m here to inform you that we have, indeed, found the point. While it may seem inconvenient to have to slice open your own hamburger buns, an unsliced bun can actually be quite the useful tool in making a toasted sandwich — cooked right in that toaster itself.

A food hack recently shared on Instagram shows a foodie doing just that. Instead of slicing the hamburger bun completely, the cook creates a hole at the top of the bun, then stuffs the ingredients inside. In this case, beans and cheese are added to the bun. Then the sandwich is pressed together (be sure to not add too much so it doesn’t spill over!) and the bun is placed in the toaster to heat up. Brilliant!

While this toaster hack works well with beans and cheese, you could do the same hack with a variety of other combinations. What about a ham and cheese sandwich? Or a tuna melt? You could even do a variety with hummus, feta cheese, and veggies. Or go for something simpler, like a peanut butter and jelly!

Other foodies love this idea, commenting on the original Instagram post from @food__made__simple, saying, “What a treat this would be,” and exclaiming how this would be great for a ham and cheese toastie as well. “Love these oven muffins,” writes one commenter. “Better with bacon, poached egg, and a cheese slice.”

However, others are saying that while the hamburger bun might get toasted, and the cheese melted, the beans might not be totally cooked through. To avoid cold or room-temperature beans, you could heat them up in the microwave or on the stovetop for a few minutes before placing them in your toaster sandwich.

Also, if you can’t find unsliced hamburger buns, you could always look for other types of rolls. Or perhaps make homemade hamburger buns yourself.
