There are lots of things I want to do first thing in the morning: go back to sleep, get more blankets, stick my face in a giant pot of coffee, go back to sleep ... you get the idea. The thing I actually do, though, is a lot better for me.
The first thing I do every morning when I wake up: I chug at least one giant glass of water.
As soon as I wake up (and brush my teeth, because I'm weird and don't like to do anything — especially talk! — if I haven't brushed my teeth!), I chug at least one giant glass of water. It can be straight from the faucet, from a pitcher in the fridge, or over ice, depending on my mood. I do that and then I start thinking about coffee. (Well, to be fair, I'm always thinking about coffee, but I can't have any until I've had my one glass of water.)
I do this for a few reasons.
1. After a good night's sleep, I'm usually thirsty.
Ideally, I'm getting between six and eight hours of sleep. That's a long time to go without water! So more often than not, I'm pretty thirsty when I wake up. When I was in my 20s, I handled this poorly and would reach for some way-too-sugary juice. Eventually, I started watering the juice way down until I was basically drinking water with a few drops of juice. Now, plain ol' water is all I need to quench my thirst.
2. It gets my day off on the right foot.
You know how they say making your bed gives you a sense of accomplishment before the day really gets started? For me, drinking a glass of water does the same thing. (I still always make my bed, don't worry!) By 7:30, I can already cross one thing off my to-do list!
3. It helps me drink more water later.
If I already have one glass in me, I'm more likely to drink additional glasses later. The rare day when I miss my daily morning water, I find that I don't drink as much water during the rest of the day. I'll either somehow drink nothing or wind up craving a soda.
