Just being in my kitchen is usually reason enough to make me smile: I’m in my favorite room of the house, I’m probably making (or thinking about making) something sweet for my family and friends, and it’s where the coffee and wine happens. So many things to be happy about!

Plus, there’s one little thing I did to my cabinets that adds a bit of cheer every time I open up the doors.

The answer isn’t that I’ve organized them. I mean, yes, they are relatively organized to my liking, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about the strips of washi tape I’ve added to the edge of the shelves.

Most rolls of washi tape, it turns out, are exactly the same width as the edges of cabinet shelves, which means I don’t even have to trim the tape down to size. (Did someone design washi tape like this on purpose? If so, I thank you!) And because the tape can be repositioned as it goes on, it’s not hard to get it on straight — or really, straight enough!

Seriously, this project really couldn’t be easier; I think it took me 10 minutes to do my entire kitchen. (Granted, I only did it to my uppers and I only have seven uppers, but you get my point!) If you like little pops of color, I highly recommend doing it to your own kitchen!

While I don’t have the shaker cabinets of my dreams (white on the top and gray on the bottom, ideally!), this little treat makes me like the existing ones way more than I should. And it’s a fun little surprise when guests go to help themselves to a glass of water or help me put dishes away.
