These days, drinking outside the wine bottle doesn’t have to mean a massive headache the next day. Good things come in boxes — promise! And while we fully support pulling out the box o’ wine when friends stop by this holiday weekend, we also get that you may want to dress things up a bit.

Enter: Beso del Sol sangria. Pour it in a pitcher with some ice and sliced fruit and you have yourself a festive holiday weekend sipper. The fact that it’s low in alcohol — 8.5% ABV — is the cherry (or orange wedge) on top.

The sangrias — there are two, red and wine — were developed on the fly when owner Bradd Levitan heard Disney was looking for an eco-friendly sangria. He hopped on a plane to Spain and the rest is basically history. Since the first product was released two-and-a-half years ago, it’s become the top-selling bag-in-box (or BIB for short) and ranks 11th on the boxed wine charts.

Our pick: While the red is the people’s choice, we actually prefer the white, which has notes of lemon, peach, and mango and feels like a last blast of summer before we head into fall.

So, What Makes It So Popular?

For starters, it’s true sangria, which is to say the grapes come from Spain (Valdepenas in south-central Spain, to be exact). Like Champagne, sangria can’t truly be called sangria unless it comes from Spain or Portugal. The red stuff is made from Tempranillo grapes, and the white is made from Airen grapes.

Another plus: There are no added sugars. It’s just wine, fruit, and spices.

Finally, at $19.99 for a three-liter BIB, the price is right — and you can find it at any number of grocery stores and drugstores, including 7-11 and CVS. And if you’re serving a smaller crowd (or just one!), the sangria also comes in 500-milliliter containers.
