This Bushwick Kitchen Makes Us Want to Paint Our Cabinets Black and Pink
If the fact that the owners of this kitchen run a speakeasy out of their Brooklyn townhouse is any indication, the people who live here are pretty badass. Jennifer and Matt, a photographer and tour guide/mixologist, respectively, have put their uniquely bold touch on their Bushwick digs, and we’re drowning in inspiration after seeing it.
The couple describe their space as simultaneously “minimalist, maximalist, cozy, crafty, and kooky,” proving that they’re not afraid to take design risks. If you ask us, those risks paid off — especially in the kitchen.
Jennifer and Matt just re-did their kitchen, pairing blush pink and smoked oak cabinets from Reform.
Jennifer is obsessed with the Tom Dixon pendant lights that she snagged at ABC Carpet and Home on impulse (after stopping into the fancy furniture store to use the bathroom). “That’s how it happens sometimes!”
The two-toned kitchen isn’t even the boldest part of their home’s design, though. The couple drew inspiration from “eccentric artists’ homes a la Frida Kahlo,” which is super evident in their dining space.
Our vote for the punchiest pop of pow is this vignette. It’s outfitted with the original wallpaper from the Beverly Hills Hotel, a splurge that the couple says was their biggest indulgence. “There are a lot of people doing knock-offs of that print, but I wanted to pay homage to the original artist. I paid full price (ouch!) but I don’t regret it.” Jennifer says.
Jennifer and Matt love thrifting for unique finds as opposed to shopping for them, which leads to their golden rule: “It’s more fun to find a treasure than to buy things online!” Jennifer sourced a ton of other fun knick-knacks from her travels too. “I’ve been to India about 10 times so I know all the great home shops there. I usually come back with two extra suitcases. Shout-out to Fabindia and Anokhi in Mumbai!”
Jennifer and Matt are a testament to the power of taking bold design risks to tell the story of your home. You can do it too! We believe in you.
