There’s something to be said for the classic caprese salad — the combination of tomato, basil, and mozzarella is hard to beat — but if you’re looking to switch things up a bit, these skewers are a fun twist. With sweet melon subbing in for tomatoes, and salty prosciutto joining the party, these handheld appetizers are sure to be a favorite at your next summer gathering.

These skewers are both a riff on caprese salad and prosciutto-wrapped melon. While we wait for heirloom tomatoes to make their triumphant return to the farmers market, these colorful melon balls (a trio of cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon) are a sweet stand-in.

To really up the wow-factor, the skewers are drizzled with a flavor-packed basil vinaigrette right before serving. The vinaigrette not only adds a punch of flavor, but it also lends a verdant green pop of color to the dish.
