This week Pinterest released their Flavor Report for 2016. For this report, Pinterest analyzed billions of food and drink pins to see what recipes and ingredients have been trending since 2015. They were able to categorize these findings into five major trends. Have you found yourself using these ingredients and recipes in your own kitchen?

The first trend in the report is dubbed “Secret Weapon Spices,” and this is one of the biggest things I’ve noticed this year as well. Specifically, the report mentions seeing a big rise in turmeric. This year turmeric has been particularly popular in drinks, like in a latte or especially when paired with apple cider vinegar. We did a twist on this trend by adding turmeric to a milkshake.

The second trend from the Flavor Report I immediately connected with is “Tropical Twists.” The report specifically mentions seeing a rise in both coconut and pineapple this year. Both of these ingredients in the report are connected to Hawaiian cuisine, including poke bowls. We’ve seen a huge increase in interest for Hawaiian food this year, and even did a tutorial on how to make your own ahi poke bowl.

Another trend mentioned in the report that I wasn’t surprised to see was a rise in “Sneaky Substitutions,” specifically a rise in ingredients like cashew milk and chickpea flour. We wrote about a few ways to use chickpea flour in your own kitchen a couple years ago, and since then I’ve seen more recipes and even a cookbook dedicated to the subject.

The other two trends that Pinterest talked about in their report were “A New Spin on Sweets” and “Herbs Get Creative.” I haven’t seen as many trendy recipes related to these categories, but I’m excited to see if they start to pop up more based on Pinterest’s data.
