Pizzeria owners from coast to coast joined forces with more than a hundred pizza-loving volunteers to accomplish an impressive feat: the world’s longest pizza pie. Measuring 1.3 miles in length, the cheese pie took one week to create and was unveiled at a ceremony in Fontana, California over the weekend.

The Guinness Book of World Records has verified its status. The pizza — made with 8,000 pounds of dough, 5,600 pounds of sauce, and 3,600 pounds of cheese — had some requirements to meet in order to earn the coveted title.

For one, it had to be at least 20 inches wide, which is roughly the diameter of a large pizza. And since local food regulations prohibit food from being left out in room temperature for more than four hours, the team had to put toppings and bake the pizza within the time window.

But the most important parameter was that it had to be longer than 1.15 miles in order to surpass the previous record that was set in Naples, Italy in 2016. Last year, 250 pizza makers spent six hours and 11 minutes to make the basil-topped pizza.

After the ceremony, the pizza was donated to local homeless shelters in the greater Los Angeles area.

“Pizza-making is a labor of love and one that will pay thousands of dividends for humanity,” says Hakki Akdeniz, the owner of New York’s Champion Pizzeria who was homeless prior to diving into the pizza industry, in a statement. “It’s all about giving back to your fellow pizza-loving man, and giving them some pizza mind.”
