Item: The Ultimate Spatula from GIR
Price: $22.50
Overall Impression: Great for getting into the nooks of pans, ergonomic design, super easy to clean

Maybe you are wondering if the world really needs another spatula. This was certainly my first thought, too! But over the past few weeks, this spatula has slowly edged out the competition when it comes to my crowded utensil jar. I find myself reaching for it again and again, and annoyed when I realize it’s in the dishwasher being cleaned. There’s something about this slim little spatula. It may just be what it claims to be: the ultimate spatula for all our cooking needs.

The Review

Characteristics and Specs: Made from a single piece of molded food-grade silicone with a polymer core. The entire utensil is heat resistant to 464°F. The smooth single-piece molding means that there are no cracks or corners in which gunk can collect, making the spatula super-easy to clean. It’s also dishwasher safe.
Favorite details: The very tip of the blade is perfect for getting into the very corners of pans. As someone who wants no licks left behind, this makes me gleeful. I also like that the top edge of the blade is flexible while the sides are stiffer. This is a boon when mixing batters and scraping them into pans.
Potential problems: None, really. The only task this spatula didn’t do well was scraping the sticky fond off the bottom of a pan after sautéing. The edge is just a little too soft and flexible for that job.
Splurge-worthy? If you’re setting up a new kitchen or unsatisfied with your current spatula options, then yes! I have a feeling this spatula will last you for many years of cooking to come.
Good for small kitchens? Yes.

There were two places where I thought the qualities of this particular spatula really stood out: with baking projects and when making pots of soups or grains.

This spatula handled mixing up thick sticky bread doughs like a champ. The solid polymer core meant that I could really get leverage to work the dough and make sure all the flour and grains were mixed. But then I could turn around and use the softer edge of the blade for folding delicate egg whites or even smoothing the frosting on the top of a cake. Sticky batters also don’t cling quite so much to the silicone surface, making these baking tasks easier and less messy.

When simmering grains or making big pots of soup, this spatula does a fantastic job of getting into the corners and making sure nothing burns on the bottom of the pan. The spatula stays cool, even when I balance it on the rim of a hot pan (the parts of the spatula in direct contact with the pan warm up, but not enough that I’ve ever burned myself). I also love this spatula when scraping out the pan and getting every last morsel into the dish.

I’ve been using this spatula regularly for about two months now, and it looks as brand new as the day I took it out of the package. It feels very durable and I am completely confident that it will stand the test of time.
