Is there any more perfect party food than pizza? Completely customizable, perfectly portionable, and, well, just about irresistible, it can feed everyone from toddlers to octogenarians with ease. And the fact that this magical treat doesn’t need to be made by you and can arrive at your house without you having to do much more than press a button is, like we said, perfect.

The only question when it comes to pizza — besides “Can I have it now?” — is how much you should actually order for a party.

Some people will have one slice, while others will have five (although most will have somewhere in between.) Some people will only eat cheese, while others are more adventurous. And of course, pizza size varies based on the place: Sometimes a large is a 14-inch pie and other times it’s 18 inches.

There’s a lot to consider, but then again not that much. After all, it’s just pizza — not rocket science. A good general rule is this:

Factor in three slices per adult and two slices per child.

Tip: Getting more than four pizzas? Call to order them a day in advance. This way, the pizza place has a heads up and you can work with them on the timing for pick-up or delivery.

If the pizzas are on the smaller, more personal size, or have a very thin crust, you can up your estimate to four slices per person. And it’s always safe to round up to get an extra pie because, why not? Pizza still tastes great when it’s frozen and reheated or just eaten out of the fridge within the next few days.
